Equal Pay for Equal Work

Almost 2,000 event-based roles are now up for grabs following the launch of a nationwide recruitment drive to fill positions at festivals, gigs, football, and hurling matches being held across the country over the summer months.At 1,200, the lion’s share of the roles will be Dublin-based, while 250 positions will be available in Cork, and around 450 jobs will be available across Kildare, Galway, and Donegal.Leading recruitment specialists Excel Recruitment say they are looking for candidates to fill a myriad of positions including bar staff, cashiers, waiting staff, kitchen staff, chefs, and cleaners, in various locations in Dublin, Cork, Galway, Kildare, and Donegal.Popular events that staff could be working at include the Punchestown Festival, the Galway and Ballinrobe races, the Trinity Summer Series – which will feature headline acts such as Paul Weller, Tom Odell, and The Villagers; and the Fairview Park concerts – which will see Fat Boy Slim, The Coronas and The Saw Doctors, amongst others, take to the stage.Shane McLave, Managing Director of Excel Recruitment said this year’s recruitment drive is going to be one of the biggest they’ve embarked on to date for the events industry:<a href="null"></a><a href="null"></a>“The nature of the work means that the hours can be flexible, and short and long contracts are on offer - a setup which is often very attractive to Ireland’s student population. The Gas Networks Ireland Apprenticeship Programme is now open. Gas Networks Ireland is recruiting apprentices to commence training in October 2024.The apprentice will train and qualify in one of the following crafts:<ol><li>Mechanical Automation and Maintenance Fitting</li><li>Electrical Instrumentation</li><li>Plumbing</li></ol>We will partner with SOLAS over the four-year programme ensuring our new apprentices are trained to the highest standard. The training will include on-site training with Gas Networks Ireland Technical training coaches where the apprentice will get practical experience on the gas network. This specialised training will take place in our Technical Training Centre. The apprentices will also attend formal classes in the Educational Training Boards and in the appropriate Technological University. The apprentices will attend ‘Understanding the Business’ modules to ensure they have an appreciation of the entire Gas Networks Ireland business and will partake in personal development training. On completion of the Apprenticeship Programme, successful trainees will be awarded a QQI Advanced Level 6 Certificate. The programme will be delivered in a creative, project-based format with students engaging in group work, workshops and developing individual portfolios.Career guidance will be integrated throughout the programme with participants getting individual career planning, CV &amp; Interview preparation support and 4 weeks work experience. You will also get the opportunity to expand your knowledge about apprenticeships and labour market opportunities.This part-time blended programme is run over 5 days, 9am – 1pm Monday to Friday at the Finglas Training Centre, Dublin. Participants will be required to be on site Monday – Thursday and work remotely on Fridays. From <a href="https://www.gov.ie/en/organisation/department-of-social-protection/">Department of Social Protection</a>Published on 18 January 2024Last updated on 17 January 2024-Landmark legislation represents major reform of child maintenance system-Child Maintenance payments will be excluded from social welfare means tests-Reforms to benefit over 16,000 lone parents and help reduce child povertyOver 16,000 lone parents are to benefit from landmark reforms of the child maintenance system being brought before the Dáil today by the Minister for Social Protection Heather Humphreys.The Social Welfare (Liable Relatives and Child Maintenance) Bill 2023 gives effect to significant reforms for lone parents, including the exclusion of maintenance payments from social welfare means tests for the first time.This means that many lone parents on reduced rates of payment will see their payment increase and others will qualify for a payment.It is estimated that this measure will benefit over 16,000 lone parents and will cost approximately €10 million per year.Speaking before the Dáil debate, Minister Humphreys said:<blockquote>“This legislation represents a landmark reform of the child maintenance system in Ireland.</blockquote><blockquote>“Under the reforms, Child Maintenance payments will be excluded from the Social Welfare means test for the first time.</blockquote><blockquote>“It is estimated that this measure will be of direct benefit to some 16,000 lone parents and will play a significant role in reducing child poverty.</blockquote><blockquote>“I saw it myself when I worked in the Credit Union. Some weeks, the child maintenance was paid, other weeks it was missed.</blockquote><blockquote>“And the person that suffers most in that situation is the child. And I don’t want to see that happen.</blockquote><blockquote>“So this Bill will make a positive to so many different families and I’m very pleased to bring it before the Dáil today.”</blockquote>In addition, the Bill provides for Liable Relative provisions to be discontinued. As a result, for lone parents receiving the One-Parent Family Payment, the Department will no longer seek to recoup a portion of claim costs from the non-resident parent.Minister Humphreys recently signed into effect regulations, which mean that lone parents no longer have to prove that they have made efforts to seek child maintenance from their child’s other parent, when applying for the One Parent Family payment or Jobseeker’s Transitional Payment.It is important to note that these changes do not replace or supersede the primary responsibility of parents to maintain their children.Minister Humphreys added:<blockquote>“I recently signed regulations, which mean that applicants for One-Parent Family Payment and Jobseeker’s Transitional Payment are no longer required to make efforts to seek maintenance from their child’s other parent.</blockquote><blockquote>“This requirement often involved lone parents having to go to Court to seek a maintenance order, so this change removes a potential additional stress for them, as well as helping to reduce the burden on our courts system.</blockquote><blockquote>“The Bill being published today provides for Liable Relative provisions to be discontinued. This was recommended by the Child Maintenance Review Group and means that for lone parents receiving the One-Parent Family Payment, the Department will no longer seek to recoup a portion of claim costs from the other parent.”</blockquote>Notes to Editors:The changes in the Social Welfare (Liable Relatives and Child Maintenance) Bill 2023 are based on the recommendations of the Report of the Child Maintenance Review Group, which the Government accepted regarding the social welfare system.The Review Group was established by the Government to examine a range of issues relating to child maintenance in Ireland. Job Frequently Asked Questions<h3>What does the role involve?</h3>Your role is to manage the coffee shop and 4 holiday cottages on the Great Blasket Island. This involves meeting and greeting overnight guests, serving tea and coffee to day visitors and ensuring the day to day running are being met. We are looking for hardworking, responsible and trustworthy duo that have great people skills and initiative. Please be aware this is not a holiday job. The season can get VERY busy and you will be on your feet for most of the day. <h4>What are the day to day runnings?</h4>A general day would be: Please note the Island can get VERY busy. This is an intense positions and caretakers must acknowldge that they are on an Island with very little resources.. -Ensuring coffee shop prepped and set up for opening and bathrooms are clean-Guests check out @ 10 am. Once checked out you must proceed with full clean of the houses and get them ready for new arrivals. This should take approx. 3 hours.-1 pm – coffee shop open, serving teas and coffee to day visitors throughout the day.-Guests check in – this time varies depending on tides.-Coffee shops closed approx 5 pm.-Clean, stock and set up coffee shop ready for next day.<h4>What are my living conditions like?</h4>Staff will sleep above the coffee shop and share the main bedroom (hence why looking for a couple) and use the coffee shop kitchen and toilets as their own. There is a stove which can be lit in the evening, any laundry will be collected and washed on the mainland and food shops will be delivered daily. During the busier months – June, July and August – we get one or two voluntary helpers who will sleep in the second upstairs bedroom. <h4>Do we need a visa?</h4>Yes if you are a non EU citizen you will need a valid working visa. <h4>Are travel expenses covered?</h4>No, the selected duo must cover all their travel expenses / accommodation expenses until they board the boat to the Island.<h4>How long is the job for?</h4>The role is from 1st April – 1st October (weather permitting). If the weather is settled the last week of March we will try get caretakers out a week before opening to settle in.<h4>Do we get a day off?</h4>Days off are determined by the weather. We could have a week of bad weather, therefore no sailings to the Island, or else 4 weeks of sunshine. This is where the role can be very intense. During the busier months of June, July and August we will get ‘helpexers’ in on a voluntary work basis in exchange for bed and board.<h4>Are we paid a wage?</h4>Yes you are paid a wage – to be discussed further upon application.<h4>What is included?</h4>All food and board is included in the position on top of your wage. Great Blasket Island Caretaker Role

Minister for Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science Simon Harris TD and Minister of State for Further Education and Skills Niall Collins TD have today announced a record number of apprentices registered in 2023, with significant numbers registering to join construction trades.The Ministers also confirmed 17 new apprenticeship programmes are proposed for this year including four in the area of construction, while a further six in areas such as firefighting and paramedics are in development.The announcement comes as figures show the apprenticeship population has increased to 27,470, with a record 8,712 new registrations in 2023. 6,588 of these are in the craft area.Speaking today, Minister Harris said:<blockquote>“Increasing the number of apprentices and apprenticeships is crucial if we want to meet the targets this Government has set under Housing for All and the Climate Action Plan.</blockquote><blockquote>“We know we need thousands more workers in some of our key craft sectors and to help achieve our climate goals.</blockquote><blockquote>“The future of this country will be safeguarded by our skilled apprentices so we must put all the tools at the disposal of young people to avail of these opportunities and get trained in areas where there is need for an increase in workers.</blockquote><blockquote>“By 2025 we set the target of 10,000 new apprentices every year and we are very close to reaching that target with close to 9,000 last year.</blockquote><blockquote>“We want to make apprenticeships as accessible and available as possible.</blockquote><blockquote>“That requires us constantly altering and changing what we can offer to people. Record Numbers apply for  Apprentices in '23 & New ones on the Way

The Minister for Transport Eamon Ryan today announced that extended fare discounts for young adults are now live so that 24 and 25 year olds can also avail of 50% fares on public transport.This latest expansion means that those aged between 18 and 25 years and full-time third levels students aged 16 and above, can travel half price on all PSO and participating commercial bus operator services, making Ireland one of the best value public transport countries in Europe for young people.Speaking about today’s announcement, Minister for Transport, Eamon Ryan said:<blockquote>&quot;This is really good news for those aged 24 and 25-years-of-age, who can now also avail of half price fares on their public transport journeys on all PSO and participating commercial services. We are seeing big increases in public transport passenger numbers and this is being led by young people in particular who are using our buses and trains more to get to and from college, training, sports facilities or just to meet up with friends in their local towns. Young Adult Leap Card with 50% off Expanded for up to 25 Year Olds

From Department of Social Protection Published on 9 January 2024Last updated on 9 January 2024- Pay-Related Benefit represents fundamental reform of social welfare system- People with strong work history to receive enhanced benefits if they lose their employment- Minister Humphreys: ‘This is about cushioning workers from sudden ‘cliff-edge’ income shock’- The Minister for Social Protection, Heather Humphreys TD, has today secured Cabinet Approval to draft law that will introduce a new Pay-Related Jobseeker’s Benefit.Approval of the general scheme for the Bill represents a major step in delivering a fundamental reform of Ireland’s social welfare system.The introduction of Pay-Related Benefit will bring Ireland in line with other EU countries and will ensure that people with a strong work history receive enhanced benefits if they lose their employment.Under the new system, there will be three rates of payment as follows:- A top rate of a maximum of €450, or 60 per cent of your prior income, for people who have made at least five years PRSI contributions. The €450 rate will be paid for the first three months;- A second rate of a maximum of €375, or 55 per cent of your prior income. This will be paid for the following three months;- A third rate of a maximum of €300, or 50 per cent of your prior income for the final three months.Speaking today, Minister Humphreys said:“I’m delighted today to have secured Cabinet approval to draft law that will provide for the introduction of a new Pay-Related Benefit System.“Under these major reforms, people who have a strong work history and who have contributed to the system via their PRSI will receive higher benefits if they find themselves out of work.“The introduction of Pay-Related Benefit will also bring Ireland in line with other European countries that already have similar systems in place.“This is about ensuring that people who have worked for long periods, perhaps even all their working lives, won’t suffer that cliff edge drop in their income if they become unemployed.”As agreed by Government, the Minister will now begin the pre-legislative scrutiny process by providing a copy of the general scheme to the Joint Oireachtas Committee on Social Protection, Community and Rural Development and the Islands for its consideration.The Minster will also publish the general scheme on the Department’s website.The Department will work on the necessary administrative, technical and IT arrangements over the coming months to facilitate the introduction of this scheme in Quarter 4 of this year.As per the PRSI Roadmap which has already been agreed by Government, there will be incremental increases in all classes of PRSI (employer, employee and self-employed) over the coming years. These increases will support the retention of the State Pension Age at 66. All classes of PRSI will increase by 0.1 per cent from October 2024, followed by a further 0.1 per cent in October 2025, gradually rising to 0.2 per cent in October 2028.A 0.1 per cent increase works out at around 90 cent per worker per week.In relation to the PRSI Roadmap, Minister Humphrey’s said:“As previously announced, it has been agreed by Government that all classes of PRSI will increase by 0.1 per cent from October 2024, followed by further modest increases up until 2028.“These measures will ensure that we can retain the State Pension age at 66 years and also provide for Pay-Related Benefit.”Notes:Key features of the new Pay-Related Benefit scheme include:- The weekly rate of payment for people who have at least 5 years paid PRSI contributions will be set at 60% of previous earnings, subject to a maximum of €450 for the first 3 months.- After that, the rate will reduce to 55% of earnings, subject to a maximum of €375 for the following 3 months.- A further 3 months will be paid at the rate of 50%, up to a maximum €300 payment.- For people who have between 2 and 5 years paid contributions, the rate will be set at 50% of previous earnings subject to a maximum for €300 per week and 6 month’s duration.- A minimum weekly payment of €125 will apply- Self-employed people will continue to be catered for under the current Jobseeker’s Benefit (Self-Employed) Scheme.- The Programme for Government and the Economic Recovery Plan include commitments to consider a Pay-Related Benefit scheme for jobseekers. Specifically, the commitment is to:“Consider increasing all classes of PRSI over time to replenish the Social Insurance Fund to help pay for measures and changes to be agreed including, …pay-related jobseeker’s benefit.”As per the PRSI Roadmap, which was agreed by Government last November, there will be a programme of incremental increases in all classes of PRSI (employer, employee and self-employed) totalling 0.7 percentage points over the coming years. These increases will support the retention of the State Pension Age at 66 and provide for the introduction of Pay-Related Jobseeker’s Benefit.
