The funding will be used across four Technological Universities and one Institute of Technology in the higher education sector to deliver an additional 132 apprenticeship craft training blocks. The four Technological Universities to benefit are the Atlantic Technological University (ATU), the Technological University of the Shannon (TUS), Munster Technological University (MTU), and the South East Technological University (SETU).Dundalk Institute of Technology (DkIT) is the Institute of Technology set to benefit.This will support the expansion of registrations across crafts including electrical, electronic security systems, pipefitting, plumbing, metal fabrication and refrigeration and air conditioning.The funding has been announced by Further and Higher Education Minister Simon Harris and Minister of State for Skills and Further Education Niall Collins to “respond to the growing demand for apprenticeships in the higher education sector”. This additional capacity is also required to meet the increase in apprentice registrations as indicated by SOLAS in a number of trades. Speaking today, Minister Harris said: “This investment reaffirms once again the Government’s strong commitment to enhancing and expanding the apprenticeship system, putting apprenticeships at the centre of the education and training system by building on previous apprenticeship programme funding.”Harris added that today’s funding announced is “also critical to the Government meeting our housing targets”. Also included in the investment is an allocation of €220,000 so that SETU’s Carlow campus can procure all the equipment required for the delivery of its Aviation programme. Minister of State Niall Collins said the Government “has been relentless in promoting apprenticeships” and noted that in order to meet demand, “we must continuously invest in infrastructure”.He added: “I am really pleased to see this investment being made across our TUs. Reductions of up to €1,000 in undergraduate fees are now being applied to all eligible third-level students’ accounts, under new cost of education measures announced in Budget 2024Minister for Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science Simon Harris TD announced further details for students today, with the reduction meaning the cost of college is falling for 96,000 students by 33pc.Students or their families who have already paid the full student contribution of €3,000 are being refunded and are asked to give their bank details to their higher education institution.This must be completed before the end of November to facilitate reimbursement of their €1,000 in December. If bank details are not provided by the student, a credit will be applied to their account.Minister Harris said: &quot;For the majority of students, there will be no action required. Fees will automatically reduce to €2,000 for all undergraduate students eligible for free fees.”For those paying in instalments, their second instalment will be reduced by up to €1,000 at the start of the second term in 2024. &quot;If you paid in full, your college will refund you by the end of the year,” Minister Harris outlined.Minister Harris also confirmed families earning under €100,000 may also be eligible for a €500 student contribution grant.While applications have closed, students may be eligible to make a late application online through SUSI’s website.In further measures, maintenance grants for third level students will increase and post-graduate supports will be brought back for the first time since the economic crash.PhD researchers funded by Science Foundation Ireland and the Irish Research Council will also receive a €3,000 increase in their stipend from January 2024.A €17 million allocation for the Student Assistance Fund has also been announced.This is a package aimed at assisting students with the cost of college, including books and class materials, rent, childcare, and transport.Mr Harris described the Student Assistance Fund as an “invaluable resource” for third level students who are “finding it difficult to make ends meet.”Earlier this year €440,000 was also provided to assist with emergency applications.“The fund is there to assist with additional costs they may face over the coming months. As reported by DublinLive:Thousands of college students across the country are in line to claim a major €500 cash boost.As a result of Budget 2023 due to the cost of living crisis, thousands more people are eligible to have their fees paid through the SUSI grant as well as receive a maintenance grant. General applications for the SUSI grant remain open until November.The SUSI grant now allows students from households with an income of between €62,000 and €100,000 to apply for the €500 grant towards their student contribution fee. Latest figures show that while an estimated 40,000 students are eligible for the grant, only 10,000 have applied.Minister for Further and Higher Education Simon Harris said: “While a large number of students have already applied for the grant, there are potentially tens of thousands more who could be availing of this support.“Today I am encouraging students and their families to go to susi.ie and to use the eligibility reckoner and take advantage of the supports that are there to reduce the cost of education.”

SUSI offers funding to eligible students in approved full-time courses at PLC, undergraduate and postgraduate levels in Ireland and in some cases the UK. Who can get the SUSI grant?A new student contribution grant of €500 has been introduced for undergraduate students. For it is available to those who meet the following criteria:-Families of less than four dependents with an income of €100,000 or less.-Families of four to seven dependents with an income of €109,600 or less.-Families of eight or more dependents with an income of €118,806 or less.The new income thresholds for the 50% student contribution grant have increased to the following amounts:-Less than four dependent children in the household - €62,000-Between four and seven dependent children in the household - €68,014-Eight or more dependent children in the household - €73,727Students in this 2023/24 academic year will also see the full benefit of increases to the maintenance grants announced in Budget 2023. From 1 January 2023, the Special and Band 1 maintenance grant rates increased by 14 per cent and all the other maintenance grant rates increased by 10 per cent.The increase in student earnings outside of term time from €4,500 to €6,552 has also come into effect this academic year. There has also been a reduction in the eligibility period from 5 years to 3 for second chance mature students who did not complete a course and are returning to college to pursue an approved course at PLC, undergraduate or postgraduate level.
