Ryanair has announced plans to expand its aircraft maintenance facility at Dublin Airport with the construction of a new state-of-the-art 4-bay hangar – a €40m investment and creating over 200 new highly paid and highly skilled jobs for engineers and mechanics. This new 120,000sq foot hangar will be one of the most environmentally friendly hangars in the EU with gas absorption heat pumps reducing energy use by up to 35%. The hangar will facilitate the heavy and line maintenance of Ryanair’s fleet at Dublin Airport as the airline grow its fleet to 600 aircraft with the delivery of more efficient new technology 737-8200 aircraft, which carry 4% more passengers while burning 16% less fuel and emitting 40% less noise. Aircraft Maintenance Engineer Apprenticeship - Dublin / Shannon

New details of “groundbreaking” degree courses outside the CAO points race in areas such as nursing, computer science, engineering and business are due to be announced on Wednesday.The move is part of a drive to create alternative pathways to third level without the need to secure high points.It also aims to forge closer links between further education colleges and universities and reduce student dropout rates.<h4>September start</h4>Minister for Further and Higher Education Simon Harris, who is due to address the Teachers’ Union of Ireland conference on Tuesday, is expected to confirm details of 14 new degree programmes, outside the CAO system. These courses will start in a further education college before transitioning to a university or technological university.It includes a new programme in nursing which will be available in further education colleges in the northwest before moving to one of the Atlantic Technological University’s campuses at St Angela’s in Sligo, Letterkenny or Castlebar. The courses will commence in September and will be open for applications to students in July.A second batch of courses is due to commence in September 2024 in areas such as culinary arts, music technology, sustainability, performing arts and supply chain management.The pathway to accessing these courses will be determined shortly. However, it is expected to mirror the existing application process for further education and training which tends to require the completion of the Leaving Cert or Leaving Cert Applied rather than CAO points. Mr Harris is also due to outline new plans to roll out disability supports to further education students, apprentices and trainees.At present supports are confined to students completing a Post-Leaving Cert (PLC) course.<h4>Disability supports</h4>Under the new plan, any part of the training system now will be able to access supports including personal assistants and dedicated learner supports. This will commence in 2024. Candidates undergo psychometric and fitness testing, an interview and a medical exam.Candidates who are invited to interview will be required to complete and sign a Garda Vetting Application Form that, pursuant to Section 8 of the Data Protection Act, 1988, will authorise the Garda Síochána to furnish to the Defence Forces either, a statement that there are no convictions recorded against a candidate, or a statement of convictions, as the case may be.<h3>Training</h3>The purpose of cadet training is to develop character and leadership skills and instil a sense of duty and responsibility in the cadet. To benefit from that training, which is conducted in an environment of strict discipline, the cadet needs mental acuity and physical agility. During 17 months of training an Army Cadet masters basic military skills, such as rifle marksmanship, as well as developing the leadership skills required of an Army Officer. On commissioning the new Officer takes up a leadership position in one of the Army Corps.<h3>Third Level Education</h3>Personnel who have successfully completed their Officer Cadet training and who have not previously attained an Honours Bachelor Degree (Level 8 of the National Framework of Qualifications) or equivalent may be assigned to a course of study leading to a degree at National University of Ireland, Galway or a course of study leading to a degree at some other third level college of education.<h3>Career Progression</h3>Commissioning is just the start of an Army Officer’s career. Once assigned to an Army Corps a Young Officer will undertake a number of courses to become a fully qualified officer of that corps. The Young Officer must also adjust to the new responsibilities of commanding and training troops.<h3>Pay</h3>Cadets receive a salary from the day they are enlisted. Minister Harris announces more than €40 million in supports for 405 new student accommodation beds at DCUFrom <a href="https://www.gov.ie/en/organisation/department-of-higher-education-innovation-and-science/">Department of Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science</a>Published on 7 March 2023Minister for Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science Simon Harris has today announced a State investment of more than €40 million to support the delivery of 405 student accommodation beds in DCU.The funding was agreed at Government today, which also noted there is work ongoing with UCD, Trinity and UCC on similar projects, and will support the Housing For All strategy.Speaking today, Minister Harris said:<blockquote>“At the heart of this policy is a commitment to deliver more student accommodation. This is a policy departure for the State but we firmly believe an investment in student accommodation is an investment in our young people.</blockquote><blockquote>“By increasing the number of beds available, we are helping more people access accommodation and also helping to relieve some of the pressures in the housing market.</blockquote><blockquote>&quot;I really want to thank the President of DCU Daire Keogh and his team for their commitment and for working with us to provide this project. This follows similar success with University of Limerick, University of Galway and Maynooth University. And we will continue to work with others to get these projects over the line and delivering for the higher education sector.</blockquote><blockquote>“My department and I are working on a strategic policy and methodology for state supported student accommodation provision which I will update Government on by the end of June. Over €40 million for new student accommodation at DCU

In February 2023 the seasonally adjusted unemployment rate was:<ul><li>Down to 4.0% for males from a rate of 4.1% in January 2023, and from a revised rate of 4.5% in February 2022.</li><li>Unchanged at 4.7% for females from the January 2023 rate, and a decrease from the rate of 4.8% in February 2022.</li><li>At 10.2% for persons aged 15-24 years (youth unemployment rate), from a revised rate of 10.3% in January 2023.</li><li>Down to 3.4% for persons aged 25-74 years from a rate of 3.5% in January 2023.</li></ul>The Central Statistics Office (CSO) issued Monthly Unemployment Estimates results for February 2023.Commenting on today’s release, John Mullane, Statistician in the Labour Market Analysis Section, said:“The seasonally adjusted unemployment rate for February 2023 (for all persons aged 15-74 years) was down to 4.3% from 4.4% in January 2023,and down from a revised rate of 4.6% in February 2022. The rate of 4.3% in February 2023 was lower than the pre-pandemic level of 4.8% recorded in February 2020.In February 2023 the unemployment rate for males was 4.0% and for females was 4.7%.The seasonally adjusted number of persons unemployed was 116,500 in February 2023, compared with 118,100 in January 2023. There was a decrease of 5,700 in the seasonally adjusted number of persons unemployed in February 2023 when compared with a year earlier.The seasonally adjusted number of males unemployed fell to 56,800 in February 2023, compared with 58,400 in January 2023. In February 2023 the seasonally adjusted number of females unemployed remained unchanged at 59,700, when compared with January 2023.”The methodology for the Monthly Unemployment Estimates involves forecasting the number of persons who are unemployed using the trend in the recipient Live Register series. The Department of Social Protection is providing Working Age Income supports to people arriving in Ireland from Ukraine under the Temporary Protection Directive. The Live Register series includes recipients of these supports who have met the relevant criteria. What is an apprenticeship?An apprenticeship is how people are trained in a craft trade or profession. You can get training in a traditional craft apprenticeship such as plumbing or carpentry or new apprenticeships such as accounting technician and IT.An apprenticeship programme provides on-the-job training with an employer, along with off-the-job training in an education centre. An apprenticeship can last 2 to 4 years, during which time you will train off the job in a college setting.When you complete an apprenticeship programme, you will get a recognised qualification at Level 5 or above on the NFQ framework.You can start an apprenticeship from age 16 to 18 years. depending on the apprenticeship programme. Types of apprenticeships A craft apprenticeship will generally last for 4 years, during which time you will spend 3 different periods in off-the-job training.Generally, the first off-the-job training phase will take place in an Education and Training Board (ETB) while the subsequent off-the-job training phases will be in a Technological University or Institute of Technology.The skills you develop will be assessed through on-the-job competence testing as well as off-the-job modular assessment and examinations and if you complete these assessments successfully, you will be awarded an Advanced Certificate – Craft (level 6 on the National Framework of Qualifications).Craft apprenticeships include carpentry, plumbing, motor mechanics and electrical apprenticeships.New apprenticeships in other areas of industryApprenticeships introduced from 2016 on lead to an award between Levels 5-10 on the National Framework of Qualifications. Apprenticeship wages and allowancesRates of apprenticeship wages and allowances can vary depending on the type of apprenticeship and the industry you have chosen:Apprenticeships developed before 2016: While you are training on the job, your employer will pay you a recommended apprenticeship wage. The ETB pay a weekly allowance equivalent to that wage while you are training off the job. In some cases, the ETB will contribute to your travel and accommodation costs. DUBLIN ZOO RECRUITMENT DAY FOR SEASONAL JOBS

Approval for 11 biodiversity officers to bring national total to 2511 local authorities have been awarded funding to appoint biodiversity officers to drive local action for biodiversity conservation. This will bring to 25 the total number of biodiversity officers in local authorities across Ireland, following last year’s approval for the appointment of a further ten officers.The 11 new positions are expected to be filled by September 2023 while a full national rollout is expected to be completed within the next 2 years.A list of local authorities to appoint new biodiversity officers is provided below.The programme is being delivered by the Heritage Council and the County and City Management Association (CCMA) with the support of the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage and the National Parks and Wildlife Service.The announcement follows a commitment in the Programme for Government to tackle the climate and biodiversity crisis, following the Dáil’s declaration of a Biodiversity Emergency in 2019, and the Citizens Assembly on Biodiversity Loss in 2022.In addition to developing a Biodiversity Plan for their area, the new biodiversity officers will advise the local authority on biodiversity related issues and the authority’s obligations in relation to protecting biodiversity. They will help local authorities to fully integrate biodiversity conservation into all of their policies, plans and actions, through training and provision of expert advice.Commenting on the development, Minister of State for Heritage and Electoral Reform, Malcolm Noonan, said:“The appointment of another 11 biodiversity officers is further evidence of our commitment to addressing the biodiversity emergency and fulfilling our objectives as set out in the Programme for Government. These biodiversity experts are exactly the people we need at local authority level to engage local communities and to take practical action to conserve and restore wildlife species and habitats.
