LinkedIn reveals its new EMEA headquarters in Dublin.

If you’ve ever wanted to work at LinkedIn, now is the perfect time to apply for a job.

Not only is the tech giant currently hiring for more than 70 roles in Dublin, it officially launched its brand new office building today (18 September).

The Dublin office opened in April, with staff gradually moving over from the old premises to the new, but today marks the official launch with An Taoiseach Leo Varadkar, TD, and An Tánaiste Frances Fitzgerald, TD.

This site is LinkedIn’s first new build outside the US. “This building cost €85m, so a lot of work and a lot of effort has gone into making it look absolutely fabulous,” said Lisa Finnegan, HR director at LinkedIn.

“Culture here at LinkedIn is incredibly important and it’s the absolute foundation for everything that we do,” she said.

The new offices boast a soundproof music room, a games room, a gym with personal trainers and a different theme on every floor, reflecting the culture of LinkedIn.

“We want to make sure that employees feel deeply connected to our culture,” said Finnegan.

For those who want to work at LinkedIn, the company is <a href="https://ie.linkedin.com/jobs/search?keywords=LinkedIn&amp;f_C=1337&amp;f_L=ie%3A0&amp;locationType=Y&amp;orig=FCTD&amp;trk=jobs_jserp_facet_geo_region">currently hiring</a> for a variety of roles for its new EMEA headquarters. Finnegan said the open positions are primarily sales roles and the company is always looking for language skills.

“We’re a very fast-paced organisation so we’re looking for people who are quite dynamic but absolutely want to come and really contribute to the overall LinkedIn culture,” she said.

The new building was undertaken in order to meet the needs of LinkedIn’s growing workforce in Ireland, which has increased from three employees to 1,200 in seven years.

Speaking at the official launch, Martin Shanahan, CEO of IDA Ireland, said LinkedIn’s ability to grow its team at such an impressive rate is a great endorsement of the talented workforce in the region.

“The significant investment in the construction and fit-out of this new EMEA HQ is a clear demonstration of LinkedIn’s long-term commitment to Ireland.”

The office itself is energy-efficient, and has environmentally friendly design features, such as a rainwater-harvesting system, 250 bicycle parking spaces and weather station-controlled automatic blinds.

As the EMEA headquarters, the site is home to employees from across the region. The building hosts art from across a variety of countries, with rooms named after brands, innovators and places of learning from around the world.

LinkedIn is hiring! Check out its fancy new Dublin offices

Roscommon could be in line for more than 50 new jobs after a US delegation visited the county with a view to establishing a business in the area.

A Roscommon businessman recently approached the Local Enterprise Office and asked if it’d host a visit from the investors.

Last Wednesday, the US delegation arrived in the county and spent the day touring the area, in the company of Roscommon County Council and LEO staff.

No details have yet emerged of the industry in question, but the businessmen visited a number of locations, including the thriving Monksland area.

Louise Ward, the head of enterprise with the LEO, hopes the visit could bring a major jobs boost in 2019.

Possibility of major jobs boost for Roscommon

The euro area (EA19) seasonally-adjusted unemployment rate was 9.3% in May 2017, stable compared to April
2017 and down from 10.2% in May 2016. This remains the lowest rate recorded in the euro area since March
2009. The EU28 unemployment rate was 7.8% in May 2017, stable compared to April 2017 and down from 8.7% in
May 2016. This remains the lowest rate recorded in the EU28 since December 2008. These figures are published
by Eurostat, the statistical office of the European Union.

Eurostat estimates that 19.092 million men and women in the EU28, of whom 15.011 million in the euro area, were
unemployed in May 2017. Compared with April 2017, the number of persons unemployed decreased by 32 000 in
the EU28 and by 16 000 in the euro area. Compared with May 2016, unemployment fell by 2.145 million in the
EU28 and by 1.452 million in the euro area.

Member States
Among the Member States, the lowest unemployment rates in May 2017 were recorded in the Czech Republic
(3.0%), Germany (3.9%) and Malta (4.1%). The highest unemployment rates were observed in Greece (22.5% in
March 2017) and Spain (17.7%).

Compared with a year ago, the unemployment rate in May 2017 fell in all Member States for which data is
comparable over time. The largest decreases were registered in Croatia (from 13.4% to 10.7%), Spain (from
20.2% to 17.7%) and Ireland (from 8.4% to 6.4%).

In May 2017, the unemployment rate in the United States was 4.3%, down from 4.4% in April 2017 and from 4.7%
in May 2016.



Youth unemployment
In May 2017, 3.762 million young persons (under 25) were unemployed in the EU28, of whom 2.621 million were in
the euro area. Compared with May 2016, youth unemployment decreased by 585 000 in the EU28 and by 402 000
in the euro area. In May 2017, the youth unemployment rate was 16.9% in the EU28 and 18.9% in the euro area,
compared with 19.0% and 21.3% respectively in May 2016. In May 2017, the lowest rate was observed in
Germany (6.7%), while the highest were recorded in Greece (46.6% in March 2017), Spain (38.6%) and Italy
(37.0%).

The euro area (EA19) includes Belgium, Germany, Estonia, Ireland, Greece, Spain, France, Italy, Cyprus, Latvia, Lithuania,
Luxembourg, Malta, the Netherlands, Austria, Portugal, Slovenia, Slovakia and Finland.
The European Union (EU28) includes Belgium, Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Germany, Estonia, Ireland, Greece, Spain, France, Croatia, Italy, Cyprus, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Hungary, Malta, the Netherlands, Austria, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovenia, Slovakia, Finland, Sweden and the United Kingdom.

Methods and definition
Eurostat produces harmonised unemployment rates for individual EU Member States, the euro area and the EU. These
unemployment rates are based on the definition recommended by the International Labour Organisation (ILO). The
measurement is based on a harmonised source, the European Union Labour Force Survey (LFS).
Based on the ILO definition, Eurostat defines unemployed persons as persons aged 15 to 74 who:
- are without work;
- are available to start work within the next two weeks;
- and have actively sought employment at some time during the previous four weeks.

The unemployment rate is the number of people unemployed as a percentage of the labour force.
The labour force is the total number of people employed plus unemployed. In this news release unemployment rates are based

on employment and unemployment data covering persons aged 15 to 74.

The youth unemployment rate is the number of people aged 15 to 24 unemployed as a percentage of the labour force of the
same age. Therefore, the youth unemployment rate should not be interpreted as the share of jobless people in the overall youth population.

When data for the most recent month are not available for a Member State, EU and EA aggregates are calculated using the
latest data available for that Member State.

Euro area unemployment at 9.3% (EU28 at 7.8%)

Minister for Education and Skills, Richard Bruton TD has announced the provision of 975 additional Special Needs Assistants. The extra posts will be available for allocation to schools over the period September 2017 to December 2017.

The number represents a 7.5% increase in SNA provision towards meeting the level of assessed demand. It brings the total number of Special Needs Assistants to 13,990 the highest ever number, an increase of 32%, from 10,575 to 13,990 since 2011.

The increase reflects the growing participation of children with special educational needs and will support their full participation and progression within the educational system.

Improved model for providing care supports

The Minister also announced the establishment of a working group, comprising relevant stakeholders, to assist in proposing an improved model for providing care supports to provide the best possible outcomes for students with special educational needs who have additional care needs.

This process in respect of SNAs follows a similar process which was led by the NCSE in respect of resource teachers, the other main support for children with special educational needs, over recent years, which culminated with the development and rollout of the new model of allocating resource teachers earlier this year.  It is intended that the reports of the Working group and of the Assessment will be completed in Spring 2018.

In broad terms, Special Needs Assistants are responsible for looking after the care needs of children with special needs, while resource teachers are responsible for supporting them in their educational needs.

Making the announcement Minister Bruton said: “Special needs assistants have continued to play a key role in helping children to participate and progress. The extra posts I am announcing today will ensure that every child that needs access to SNA support can receive this support. That is my priority. The NCSE will now proceed to notify schools of their SNA allocations for the coming 2017/18 school year and will publish details of these allocations on their website www.ncse.ie today.

This decision is being made now to ensure that each child that is assessed as needing SNA support receives access to such support for the commencement of the new school year. This will ensure that children with special educational needs may be enrolled and take up their places in September.

Supports for Children with Special Educational Needs
<ul>
 	<li>In 2017 the Department of Education and Skills will invest €1.68 billion in special education, almost one fifth of the entire education budget. This is a 32% increase since 2011.</li>
 	<li>The number of Special Needs Assistants has increased by 32%, from 10,575 to 13,990 since 2011.</li>
 	<li>The number of Special Classes has increased by 120% with over 600 new special classes opened since 2011, bringing the total number of such classes to over 1,100.</li>
 	<li>The new model for allocating Resource Teachers to schools has been successfully introduced, with 900 additional resource teachers allocated from September 2017 to support the model and to ensure that children with special needs can access additional teaching supports.</li>
</ul>
Supporting Children with SEN to Progress
<ul>
 	<li>Estimated total Students with SEN across school settings have increased by some 21% since 2011.</li>
 	<li>There are 700 more children with special needs entering Third-level education now than two years ago, up 31%.</li>

DHL opens dedicated life sciences hub to support Ireland’s €39bn biopharma sector.

Up to 50 jobs are to be created at <a href="http://www.dhl.com/en.html">DHL</a>’s new 40,000 sq ft transport and logistics hub in Dublin, dedicated to supporting life sciences manufacturers.

The pharmaceutical grade facility is located at Horizon Logistics Park at Dublin Airport.

The life sciences centre of excellence is fully approved by the Health Products Regulatory Authority.
Designed for life sciences
Building on DHL’s capabilities in supporting the global pharmaceutical supply chain, the new secure facility will enable pharma companies operating in Ireland to transit products through a temperature-controlled end-to-end supply chain management system. This includes storage, pick and pack, and inventory control.

The 40,000 sq ft of warehousing space at the DHL facility is segregated into different temperature regimes, including: ambient (15-25 degrees), chill (2-8 degrees), and a blast and holding freezer capable of temperatures of minus 20 degrees.

The latest numbers available from <a href="http://www.idaireland.com/">IDA Ireland</a> indicate that there are now more than 120 biopharmaceutical operations in the country, out of which 40 are approved by the FDA to produce goods for the pivotal US market.

There are 29,000 people directly employed in the biopharma FDI sector alone, and nine out of the top 10 biopharma giants in the world are manufacturing in Ireland.

In 2015, the biopharma sector recorded €39bn worth of exports, and it contributes more than €1bn in corporation tax to the Irish exchequer annually.

The new facility makes Ireland the 43rd country in which DHL has built a life sciences centre of excellence.

“DHL has already established an excellent life sciences customer base and reputation in Ireland through its Air, Ocean, Road and Express divisions, and this new site gives customers access to a completely integrated global logistics solution,” explained Ciaran Foley, Ireland managing director, DHL Supply Chain.

“Our investment in Horizon also gives us the opportunity to provide supply chain services, which are fully compliant and managed within strict regulatory controls from start to finish. This is the cornerstone of DHL’s offering.”

Subway to open 51 new Irish stores by 2020!

Sandwich restaurant Subway has said it will increase the number of its outlets on the island of Ireland by 51 by 2020, bring its total here to 321.

The company&#39;s expansion plans will see the creation of 408 new jobs.

In total, Subway said it aims to increase the number of stores in Ireland and the UK to 3,000 by 2020, creating around 5,000 new jobs.

It currently has 2,500 outlets in Ireland and the UK, all owned and operated by a network of small business owners.

The company is seeking to capitalise on a growing appetite for cheap food on the go and said its expansion plans are in response to consumer demand.

Peter Dowding, Country Director for UK and Ireland said that the company&#39;s growth is a testament to the hard work and effort of its franchisees.

&quot;We are confident our business model will continue to grow as more and more consumers demand great tasting food at a value price-point,&quot; Mr Dowding said.

&quot;With 5,000 new jobs expected over the next three years, opening up a further 500 stores demonstrates not only the value of the business to our franchisees but also collectively, the real and significant contribution to Irish and British economies,&quot; he added.

Subway shut 359 restaurants in the US last year amid stiff competition in a highly fragmented fast-food industry.

Subway opening 51 new stores across Ireland

Ireland’s unemployment rate has fallen to a nine-year low 6.2 per cent as conditions in the labour market continue to improve.
The latest figures show that the number of workers classified as unemployed fell by 4,800 to 135,800 in April, equivalent to an annual decrease of 47,300.

Recruitment of New Apprenticeships a year behind Target by 456 Placements! According to an Oireachtas Education Committee review, it was highlighted that while it was hoped 976 new apprenticeship positions would be filled by the end of 2018, uptake only stands at 520 so far for the year. Why is this, when at <a href="https://www.jobalert.ie/">JobAlert.ie </a>we&#39;re constantly being asked by young people for more information on Apprenticeship opportunities? Feedback we&#39;re receiving suggests that they cannot easily find employers willing to take them on. IBEC noted a lack of employer buy in, suggesting that the cost of having to pay a salary while an apprentice attended college was an issue. An example given showed that a Manufacturing Engineer Apprentice in one organisation cost the firm €90,000. They suggested that more financial support be given to employers who actively take on Apprentices through the newly devised Apprenticeship Schemes, bringing funding in line with traditional Craft Apprenticeships that receive support through the National Training Fund. The talks were attended by Solas, Skillnet Ireland, the Technical Higher Education Association, FIT, IBEC, ETB and the Department of Education and Skills. It was also highlighted that opting to pursue an Apprenticeship can carry an &quot;unwarranted stigma&quot; to students with pressure to pursue a university course instead. True, we have also found this and we recently did an article on this very subject, it&#39;s a good read - <a href="https://www.jobalert.ie/blog/are-we-talking-our-kids-out-of-apprenticeships">Are we Talking our Kids out of Apprenticeships!</a> The Committee was eager to explore ways of encouraging second level school leavers to take up Apprenticeships and on job training as a way to address the real skill shortages experienced in Ireland at the moment. This is particularly evident in the Hotel and Hospitality Industry. Dr. Phillip Smyth, Head of Shannon College of Hotel Management, who operate placements throughout Ireland in the hospitality industry, noted that negative perceptions exist regarding the hospitality industry and currently there&#39;s a low uptake on placements and traineeships. He said that the prestige of Apprenticeships has declined and that &quot;while there is still great respect for tradespersons, this area has been overwhelmed by discourse on &quot;points&quot;, CAO deadlines, College places, change of mind dates, accommodation and so on.&quot; Dr. Smyth said that admission to hospitality programmes is declining in an industry where at least 60,000 additional jobs will be created in the next ten years. This is obviously very worrying for employers in this industry who he said are &quot;pessimistic&quot; about filling these jobs domestically. It was also suggested that the Leaving Certificate Curriculum should include a separate subject in Tourism and Hospitality taking into account that 1 in 9 of Ireland&#39;s working population are currently employed in this industry. It was raised that a lot of progress has been made in the area of Apprenticeships and it&#39;s gaining momentum, but we still have a long way to go to meet the demand for qualified employees now and in the future and to bring Ireland in line with other EU Countries. It was noted that school liaison officers also have a big part to play in promoting Apprenticeships and Traineeships to students and that better support and governance needs to be provided to support service providers and employers by the Government. But what about parents, at the moment it seems that educational achievements are defined more in terms of CAO points achieved and University offers granted. Great for those who wish to pursue this line of education, but we also need to develop and provide more real alternative learning opportunities for all students of all ages, ambition and ability to be totally inclusive. Non EEA Students can apply for permission to remain in the State and work! Closing date for applications 20th January 2019. Minister Flanagan announced a Special Scheme allowing certain non-EEA nationals to apply for permission to remain in the State <ul> <li>Non-EEA nationals resident in the State who held a valid student permission from 2005 to 2010 to benefit </li><li>Scheme expected to address a significant cohort of the &#39;undocumented&#39; persons in the State</li></ul> The Minister for Justice and Equality, Charlie Flanagan, T.D., recently announced the launch of a scheme which will allow certain non-EEA nationals, who came to Ireland to study between January 2005 and December 2010, to apply for permission to remain in the State. The scheme will be open for 3 months, from Monday 15th October 2018 to Sunday 20th January 2019, and is open to non-EEA nationals resident in the State who held a valid student permission during the period of 1 January 2005 to 31 December 2010 and who have not in the intervening period acquired an alternative immigration permission. In welcoming the scheme, the Minister made the point that he expects that those who benefit from it are in turn going to benefit the economy, saying: &quot;I am pleased that the scheme provides that permission will be granted for an initial probationary period of two years at the end of which qualifying persons must be able to clearly demonstrate that they are self-sufficient and did not become an unreasonable burden on the State. In these circumstances, beneficiaries can be expected to be net contributors to the economy.&quot; INIS has developed an online application form for eligible applicants to apply under the scheme. Eligible applicants may apply to the Minister for Justice and Equality for a permission to remain in the State including the right to reside and work in the State and will be subject to renewal after two years. Modest fees will be charged under the scheme. The Scheme addresses a significant cohort of people who have been in the State for a long number of years and who form part of the &quot;undocumented&quot; persons in the State by virtue of them having moved from a position of having permission to be in the State some years ago to having fallen out of permission. While family reunification is not permitted under this scheme, the family circumstances of persons present in the State will be taken into consideration. For persons qualifying under this Scheme, the family unit who have been residing with them in the State may be given permission to remain under the scheme. Full details and criteria for the scheme together with the online application form are set-out on the INIS website www.inis.gov.ie. Who is eligible for this scheme? Non-EEA nationals resident in the State who held a student permission during the period of 1 January 2005 and 31 December 2010, who have not in the intervening period acquired an alternative immigration permission. Other conditions include not having a criminal record. How long will the scheme be open for? The scheme will be open for 3 months, from Monday 15 October 2018 to Sunday 20 January 2019 (inclusive). INIS has developed an online application form for eligible applicants to apply under the scheme. Can people currently not residing in Ireland apply for permission under this scheme? No, applications are only accepted from people who are residing in Ireland. Is there a fee for applying to this scheme? Yes. A non-refundable administration fee of €250 applies to the processing of this application, which must be paid at the time of application. An additional €450 fee must also be paid at the time of application, and this will be refunded if the application is unsuccessful. Successful applicants will be issued with an initial 2 year registration at a reduced fee of €300 (normal fees would be €600 i.e. €300 paid annually). What immigration stamp will successful applicants receive and can they access the labour market? Successful applicants will be granted a stamp 4S permission that will provide an immigration permission to live and work in the State without the need for an Employment Permit, for 2 years. At the end of the 2 year permission period applicants will be granted a Stamp 4 permission for 1 year if they can provide evidence that they have complied with the terms of the temporary stamp 4S conditions. If applicants are granted a Stamp 4S permission, can their family members obtain this permission also? Under this scheme, family reunification is not permitted - i.e. spouse or partner and dependent children living outside the State, cannot seek to join the applicant in Ireland. However, the family circumstances of persons present in the State will be taken into consideration. This means that where a person qualifies under this Scheme, the family unit who have been residing with them in the State may be given permission to remain under the scheme. What are the conditions attached to this permission? Minister Flanagan announced a Special Scheme allowing certain non-EEA nationals to apply for permission to remain in the State <ul> <li>Non-EEA nationals resident in the State who held a valid student permission from 2005 to 2010 to benefit </li><li>Scheme expected to address a significant cohort of the &#39;undocumented&#39; persons in the State</li></ul> The Minister for Justice and Equality, Charlie Flanagan, T.D., recently announced the launch of a scheme which will allow certain non-EEA nationals, who came to Ireland to study between January 2005 and December 2010, to apply for permission to remain in the State. The scheme will be open for 3 months, from Monday 15th October 2018 to Sunday 20th January 2019, and is open to non-EEA nationals resident in the State who held a valid student permission during the period of 1 January 2005 to 31 December 2010 and who have not in the intervening period acquired an alternative immigration permission. In welcoming the scheme, the Minister made the point that he expects that those who benefit from it are in turn going to benefit the economy, saying: &quot;I am pleased that the scheme provides that permission will be granted for an initial probationary period of two years at the end of which qualifying persons must be able to clearly demonstrate that they are self-sufficient and did not become an unreasonable burden on the State. In these circumstances, beneficiaries can be expected to be net contributors to the economy.&quot; INIS has developed an online application form for eligible applicants to apply under the scheme. Eligible applicants may apply to the Minister for Justice and Equality for a permission to remain in the State including the right to reside and work in the State and will be subject to renewal after two years. Modest fees will be charged under the scheme. The Scheme addresses a significant cohort of people who have been in the State for a long number of years and who form part of the &quot;undocumented&quot; persons in the State by virtue of them having moved from a position of having permission to be in the State some years ago to having fallen out of permission. While family reunification is not permitted under this scheme, the family circumstances of persons present in the State will be taken into consideration. For persons qualifying under this Scheme, the family unit who have been residing with them in the State may be given permission to remain under the scheme. INIS has developed an online application form for eligible applicants to apply under the scheme. Can people currently not residing in Ireland apply for permission under this scheme? No, applications are only accepted from people who are residing in Ireland. Is there a fee for applying to this scheme? Yes. A non-refundable administration fee of €250 applies to the processing of this application, which must be paid at the time of application. An additional €450 fee must also be paid at the time of application, and this will be refunded if the application is unsuccessful. Successful applicants will be issued with an initial 2 year registration at a reduced fee of €300 (normal fees would be €600 i.e. €300 paid annually). What immigration stamp will successful applicants receive and can they access the labour market? Successful applicants will be granted a stamp 4S permission that will provide an immigration permission to live and work in the State without the need for an Employment Permit, for 2 years. At the end of the 2 year permission period applicants will be granted a Stamp 4 permission for 1 year if they can provide evidence that they have complied with the terms of the temporary stamp 4S conditions. If applicants are granted a Stamp 4S permission, can their family members obtain this permission also? "Undocumented” may be entitled to Reside and Work in the State! 

The Irish National Organisation of the Unemployed has put together an information guide and practical advice where people have expressed concerns about taking up such seasonal work and how it might impact the entitlement to a Jobseekers payment when the contract ends. FastTrack - Seasonal Work At this time of year job opportunities for people in receipt of Jobseekers payments arise with a great deal of short-term seasonal work on offer, providing not just much needed income but also invaluable work experience for future employment. The INOU has put together an information guide and practical advice where people have expressed concerns about taking up such seasonal work and how it might impact the entitlement to a Jobseekers payment when the contract ends. FastTrack - Sign up for up to 12 Weeks The Department of Employment Affairs &amp; Social Protection (DEASP) operates a fast-tracking system for customers who sign-off to take up work for a short period of up to 12 weeks. If you have been offered full time employment, including work for 4 days or more per week, for up to 4 weeks you will not qualify for a Jobseekers payment for this period but you may benefit from the Fast Track process. The Fast Track system allows you to sign back on to your claim without the need to go through the process as a new claimant and ensure that your original Jobseekers payment is re-instated without delay. Signing off and your Jobseekers Claim If you are in receipt of a Jobseekers payment you can take up full time employment for up to 12 weeks and you will not need to make a new claim when your employment is finished. You will be required to provide information about your employment, however there should be no undue delay or issue processing or making payment on your reactivated claim. Before you take up or finish employment remember, you must inform the Department if your spouse or partner takes up employment or self-employment during the period you have &#39;signed-off&#39; Other issues to be aware of the period of time you are employed, where you have &#39;signed off&#39; your Jobseekers claim, will not count as a period of unemployment. This &#39;sign-off&#39; period in your jobseekers/social welfare record may have an impact on your ability to engage with or participate in education, training or retraining courses. If you intend to take up state supported education, training, employment, enterprise or work experience programmes in the future check with the INOU how this will affect your entitlement to do so. &#39;Signing off&#39; your Jobseekers claim may have an impact on your entitlement to a Rent Supplement or Mortgage Interest Supplement - contact the INOU for more information. If you are living in local authority accommodation or are on the Rental Accommodation Scheme (RAS) you will need to inform the local authority of any increase in your income. Christmas Work! Jobseeker payment concerns?

During our &quot;Rental Crisis&quot; are we forcing skilled workers to remain on benefits as we near full employment? It&#39;s a no brainer, when you look at the complexity and structure of our benefits system and realise how scared people really are in relation to the escalating crisis around our rental property market, as costs reach an all-time high. Being on the frontline in job advertising, we&#39;re hearing over and over again from employers encountering real fear from potential employees. Just when they think they&#39;ve found the right candidate and make an offer to an unemployed person, at the last minute they cannot accept the job. Either because they cannot work over 35 hours for fear of losing rent supplements or having done the maths - they just can&#39;t afford to take up the position! Maybe it&#39;s not the system, maybe it&#39;s confusion? But either way, the result is the same. I&#39;m not surprised at all that people would be concerned and confused, while researching for this article, I have seen first-hand how complicated the whole process is. For example, if you are in receipt of Rent Supplement and find full-time work i.e. 30 hours or more, you may not be entitled to retain your Rent Supplement and if this happens it will cease after 30 days or until you are paid, whichever is earlier. If you get part-time work (defined as less than 30 hours a week) you can keep your Rent Supplement but your income from work will be assessed against your Rent Supplement and it may be reduced. Now if you live in an expensive rental area 10 additional hours a week is not going to pay that rent! So, here&#39;s the dilemma you have to find work under 30 hours and ensure that you are not paid an hourly rate that will push you over certain thresholds! And God forbid that you might be asked to work overtime during the busy festive season because you could lose more than you gain. There is of course HAP, Housing Assistance Payment, a form of social housing support and under this scheme you can take up full time employment but there are again complicated guidelines/criteria that you must meet in order to receive this assistance. For example; The rent being charged for the accommodation must be within the limits set down for the household type in that local authority&#39;s area &#39;Rent limits&#39;, but sure how can you control what you are being charged for your rent? And you must not earn over a certain amount according to a Table of Maximum net income limited in Social Housing Assessment Regulations: For example Carlow, Cavan, Clare, Donegal, Galway County, Laois, Leitrim, Longford, Mayo, Monaghan &amp; Offaly – The Maximum Net Income Threshold is €25,000. Cork, Kerry, Kilkenny, Limerick, Louth, Wexford and Waterford; €30,000 and Dublin, Meath, Kildare and Wicklow €35,000. I can&#39;t say I blame the people from being cautious – it&#39;s just so difficult to understand the process and structure inside out, so one can see why they wouldn&#39;t want to &quot;rock the boat&quot;! I suppose it&#39;s understandable when taking up a job runs the risk of losing the security you have, during extremely uncertain times. When more and more families are finding themselves homeless. We&#39;re not at all suggesting that people who are working are not feeling the pain and fear either, they certainly are and employers are feeling the pressure to raise hourly rates to retain their core people as living costs rise. It&#39;s a very worrying situation all round. In the meantime we have jobs both skilled and unskilled that need to be filled and businesses suffering.

The Rental Crisis: Benefit Traps & Effects on the Workforce

A new Affordable Childcare Scheme is opening up to all Irish parents from October 2019! In this article, we look at 8 different examples given on what parents and parents to be can expect, as Minister for Children and Youth Affairs, Dr. Katherine Zappone continues to prepare for its&#39; implementation. While this scheme makes great strides in the right direction, will it do enough to support parents who want to continue working after having a family? Amount of subsidy available is based on net household income and number and age of children. Examples <ul> <li>Lone parent on net annual income of €26,000, with one child aged 2 years in need of 40 hours of childcare per week will get a weekly subsidy of €175 </li><li>Family with a net annual income of €30,000, with two children aged 1 and 2.5 years and in need of 25 hours of childcare per week will get a weekly subsidy of €220 </li><li>Family with net annual income of €34,600, with a 1 year old and 2 year old twins in need of 40 hours of childcare per week; €522 </li><li>Family with net annual income of €35,000, with two children aged 1 and 2.5 years and in need of 25 hours of childcare per week: €192 </li><li>Family with net annual income of €47,500, with two children aged 2 years (40 hours childcare per week) and 5 years (17 hours out-of-school care per week): €128 </li><li>Family with net annual income of €53,000, with two children aged 2 years (40 hours childcare per week) and 5 years (17 hours out-of-school care per week) (Making 10% pension contribution); €93 </li><li>Family with net annual income of €60,000, with a 1 year old and 2 year old twins in need of 40 hours of childcare per week; €176</li> <li> Family with net annual income of €60,000, with three children aged 2 years (40 hours childcare per week) and 5 years (17 hours out-of-school care per week) and 7 (17 hours out-of-school care per week). (Making 10% pension contribution); €92 </li></ul> Of course, it&#39;s always &quot;worth it&quot; to have a healthy beautiful family, but is it worth continuing to work? Are parents being forced out of the workforce, predominantly women due to the costs associated with childcare? This is the question that faces a lot of parents as they decide whether one parent should stay at home - at least until the children are school going age. During a time of almost &quot;full employment&quot; can we afford to lose key skilled professionals? It&#39;s fine if it&#39;s by choice, but what if we are forcing people out of the workforce! According to recent data from the Central Statistics Office (CSO) there is a massive financial burden on working parents around the country since the crash as costs for childcare continue to soar. We now rank amongst the highest in Europe. The latest household budget surveys revealed that on average, a Dublin household with children up to the age of 14 was spending 36pc more than it had been paying five years ago with some families outlaying more on childcare than on their mortgage. Full Time childcare costs can range between €850 - €1,300 a month for 1 child depending on the location of the Childcare service. An average of almost €13,000 a year. The minister&#39;s office has announced that comprehensive information, training and support will be available to parents, childcare providers and other stakeholders from early next year and that these changes will mean that more families will benefit. Childcare subsidy for "Irish Triplets" 

Minister for Children and Youth Affairs, Dr Katherine Zappone, has announced that the new Affordable Childcare Scheme will open for applications in mid- October 2019, with payments flowing from November 2019.  The scheme will offer a single, easy to access system of financial subsidies towards childcare for families in Ireland.  Through this, it will enhance affordability and accessibility, and provide a platform for investment in quality childcare to benefit current and future generations.  “I have been steadfast in my commitment to deliver the crucial change that families need, and so I am delighted to be able to announce the timeframe for the introduction of the new Affordable Childcare Scheme” commented Minister Zappone.  “We are building the radical new childcare infrastructure needed to transform childcare in Ireland from one of the most expensive in the world into one of the very best. This involves putting in place a legislative framework, through the Childcare Support Act 2018, and building a world class IT system to allow parents to access tailored childcare supports that will meet the needs of each family.  By lowering childcare costs, the Affordable Childcare Scheme aims to support parents to return to work and training, to reduce child poverty and to improve child outcomes.” From October 2019 everyone will be able to apply for the new Affordable Childcare Scheme.  To ensure a smooth transition for both parents and providers, the current childcare subsidy schemes will remain in place for the 2019/20 programme year.  People will be able to register for the current schemes as normal, from August 2019 up until the new Affordable Childcare Scheme launches.  After the launch date, people can choose to move over to the new Scheme or to remain on their old scheme for the remainder of the programme year.  This will provide certainty for current scheme beneficiaries, offer ample time to apply for the new scheme and ensure that no family is worse off during the transition period.  Once the Affordable Childcare Scheme is in place in October 2019, registrations under the existing schemes will cease. Comprehensive information, training and supports will be available to parents, childcare providers and other stakeholders from early next year in readiness for the launch of the scheme.  Enhancements to the Affordable Childcare Scheme announced as part of Budget 2019 will mean that an even greater number of families will now benefit from the scheme.  The significant increase in the maximum net income threshold to €60,000 per annum means that an estimated 7,500 additional children will benefit from the scheme relative to the original proposals, including some families with gross income of up to €100,000 per annum.  Over 40,000 other children, already eligible, will see increases to their subsidies.  Childcare providers, who play an integral role in the delivery of all of the DCYA childcare schemes, will continue to receive a Programme Support Payment (PSP) in 2019. Budget 2019 provided funding of €19.4m for PSP, an increase of nearly 8%, which will bring the total amount of PSP paid to childcare providers since 2017 to over €55m in recognition of the administrative support they offer in delivering the schemes’ benefits to parents.
