Most of us at some stage have done it, we dream about our kids going to University – the photograph with the cap and gown, scroll in hand. The proud parents gleaming with pride and the Grandparents in the shot too if we’re lucky. We work hard to make ends meet, to give our kids the very best, to let them have opportunities that we could only dream of. But what happens when our kids don’t conform to “our plans”.

For some kids, ‘coming out’ and telling their parents that they want to leave school between 16 - 18 to do an Apprenticeship is a very difficult task, yes they might be a very bright child but that doesn’t matter, they may want to take a different learning path.  Initial reactions may be shock and disappointment, we may even try to talk them out of it, “it’s only a phase”, “you’ll enjoy next school term better”.  If the child won’t listen this may even turn to anger “all the years I’ve slaved to give you the opportunities, I never had and now you want to waste that!”, “well that’s great, why can’t you be like so &amp; so who did bla bla bla”, you’d swear the poor child had committed a crime.    Over the years I’ve had young people ask me “How can I tell my parents I want to leave school without making them angry”?   Surely this is wrong!

Parents, it’s not the end of the World if your child decides to leave “formal” education to take a different route. Latest statistics show that there has been an increase of 25% last year in the number of young people opting to pursue apprenticeships. And yes it’s only 2-3% of school leavers that do this in Ireland while 60% progress to higher education, but in Germany it’s the opposite - 60% of school leavers take the apprenticeship route and Germany are doing well off it, they have the largest national economy in Europe and are fourth-largest by nominal GDP in the world.

As far as I’m concerned, the healthiest way to react to a young adult who is having “such thoughts” is like everything else. Hear them out, listen carefully, try and understand why they want to do this, support them and research the options with them before jumping to conclusions. They are not “going to ruin their lives” due to non-conformity of your plans, these represent your dreams not theirs.

Dropping out of school or college early to enter the workforce in a “learn as you earn” programme such as an Apprenticeship or Traineeship is not a failure. It can be a very rewarding and positive experience for both parents and young adults if planned carefully and with the full support of those around the person in question. Many, many people before them have become very successful without a formal college degree. When it comes to big decision making, young people need your support more than ever, so have their back, embrace their feelings, research with them, educate yourself about the options out there and then if they still feel the same about their decision – do what all good parents do...support them all the way and be very proud when they graduate in their field.

HERE’S SOME INFORMATION ON APPRENTICESHIPS AND TRAINEESHIPS 2018

The ETBs (Education Training Boards) have some really great pre-apprenticeship &amp; apprenticeship courses. Traditional craft apprenticeships include those in Construction, Electrical, Engineering and Motor sectors. There are over 20 new occupational apprenticeships in the Computer &amp; ICT, MedTech, Insurance, Finance, Accountancy, Logistics and Hospitality sectors – a lot of these lead to BA programmes. Some of these apprenticeships have already started taking in candidates whilst other are still in the development stage. These are mainly one-year long Traineeship programmes that combine formal training with extensive workplace placement. All traineeships include: Industry recognised certification (QQI and/or City and Guilds), Meal and travel allowances and other allowances may also be payable.

So who’s recruiting?
Some really large organisations are offering opportunities each year such as the ESB, Aerlingus, Atlantic Aviation, County Councils, Dublin Bus and GSK to name a few. Take GSK for an example they have bases in Sligo, Cork &amp; Waterford and their apprentice opportunities are in the areas of; Mechanical Automation and Maintenance &amp; Electrical &amp; Instrumentation. A lot of small employers are now taking on candidates for the traditional Craft Apprenticeships and they mainly advertise on job boards such as jobsireland.ie and jobalert.ie. It’s also worthwhile putting out the word that you are looking for an apprenticeship as word of mouth still works and you can check in with your local ETB office or jobs centre because sometimes they get information on vacancies that are not even advertised.

Allowances and Grants;
There are allowances paid when doing an apprenticeship. SUSI - Student Maintenance Grant:
This means-tested grant is a source of financial help available to students on full-time Post Leaving Certificate/ Further Education programmes. Mature students may qualify for assistance by means of Back to Education Allowance which allows adults to return to full time education while continuing to get income support. People in receipt of certain social welfare payments can retain payments whilst participating on our PLC/Further Education programmes. Want to live and work in Paradise?

So, you were chosen from hundreds of applicants for an interview that you Aced.

You even went out to pre-celebrate with your friends, it was a great night ?you and your Sister from another mister Sarah ended up knocking back ‘slippery nipples’ while dancing on bar stools.  On cue Chelsea got the perfect shot to tag you in on Social Media.  And as the lyrics go to James Arthurs’s song, “you danced the night away, you drank too much”, Sarah held your hair back as you were throwing up and then “you smiled over your shoulder”…and Chelsea who was “stone cold sober” was on cue again to take the perfect photo as you sat in vomit at the edge of the pavement.

It’s a week later and you’re surprised that #bestjobintheworld.co haven’t called you back to make an offer?  Really?

You might also be surprised to hear that numerous recent surveys have proven that prospective employers also like Social Media.  In fact, according to a report by YouGov, a well-known UK based market research company who surveyed over 2,000 business decision makers – one in five employers have turned down a candidate after checking Social Media prior to making an offer.

And Social Media checks are far more popular than you think.  CareerBuilder’s recent survey found that 70% of employers use this process to screen candidates before hiring.  54% have decided not to hire based on Social Media activity.

“Invasion of Privacy”, I hear you scream!   Fair enough, but you need to take some responsibility for your public image, you’ve left yourself vulnerable.  You must adjust your account settings and while at it, review the way people like Chelsea can tag you in photos.   The majority of employers cited evidence of excessive drinking and/or drug use as a reason not to offer.

But it’s not only when you’re out socialising that can cause a problem.  Poor communication skills, bad grammar and spelling mistakes also ranked highly as a reason not to employ along with evidence of the candidate bad mouthing previous employers or displaying aggressive behaviour.  The use of discriminatory, offensive or bad language, slang or jokes relating to race, gender, religion or politics was also frowned upon.  Some employers also discovered that candidates lied about their qualifications through social media when they joked about it on-line.

Too many “Selfies” was also seen as a signal that you may be too self-centred and not a team player – seriously…that’s what the statistics came back with, so slow down with the #picoftheday, #followme, #nomakeup, #nofilter, #whatever ….#thinkofhebiggerpic instead.

To become more employable, you could publicly display information that shows off your professional accomplishments and qualifications in a positive way.  Showing pictures of you with your team on the playing field or promoting the charity and voluntary work that you do is obviously going to be more welcomed by future employers, or you could just leave a simple profile picture visible.  But whatever you do don’t go deleting your account completely, 57% of business decision makers surveyed said they were less likely to interview a candidate that didn’t exist on-line at all.

The motto of the story is to restrict what people can see and also what “friends” can tag you in – keep control of your on-line presence.  Think twice before you post something, once published, it’s there forever even when deleted.

You’ve got to see it from the employers’ point of view, taking on someone new is a big commitment, it’s a form of relationship and there are risks involved.  Choosing the right person for the job is so important not only for the business but also for the colleagues who will have to train this person in and let’s face it, spend more time with them than they spend with their own families.

I’m a great believer in letting young people out into the real World as soon as they are ready, it expands life experiences, allows them to earn their own money, builds self-reliance &amp; confidence and allows them to meet other good role models at work like Managers and more mature workmates.

We also have to remember that not every child wants to take the “Academic Route”. So preparing them for work provides alternatives to help them develop just as much or indeed to excel beyond their peers, if they choose to leave school earlier. And remember just because you didn’t get the opportunity to go to College doesn’t mean that your child will want to go, now that you&#39;re making it possible.

Is your child prepared to work? This brings me to “mollycoddling”. As parents it’s important to know the difference early on regarding being protective and being overly protective. Parents, who smother their kids with too much mollycoddling, actually do them more harm than good. Your kids will remain dependent on you and will be incapable of making decisions or fending for themselves and this will hurt when it comes to employment!

Recently a Manager of a very large Restaurant chain told me that she is disturbed by the amount of parents who are calling into stores with their 17/18 year old&#39;s in town asking for jobs! Yes Mammy is asking the Manager if they have any jobs for “Little Jimmy”? She said this is a definite No, No! There’s not a chance that they will take on this young person. Surely if they cannot speak for themselves how are they going to interact with customers under pressure?

So if your child said “Mam, I don’t want you to come with me! They were absolutely right!!” So listen up parents, you’re not helping your child by doing this.

Confidence building needs to start early on! You need to teach your children life skills and responsibility through age appropriate tasks under supervision to make children learn new things and also help them gain independence, manners and confidence. It is all a part of growing up.

Tasks like going to the shops, sending your child up to the waitress to ask for a fork!, asking for the bill, letting your child pay for their own purchases, answering the phone, taking messages, chores about the house, setting their own alarm for school, these are all little things that will help grow their confidence.

You’ll be surprised how capable your child can be. If they make a mistake they will learn from it.

Letting them choose their own clothes, yes even on a cold day. If they forget a hat and scarf they will be cold, but they will remember it the next time. This is how they master the art of right decision making. They learn the consequences of wrong decisions and how to weigh up options before committing.

So hopefully your child will be able to walk up to a Manager and leave in their own CV &amp; get the Job!!

How to get a job with no experience

ALL BUS SERVICES have been cancelled for Leinster and Munster tomorrow as the country deals with ongoing severe weather conditions.

The cancellation affects Dublin Bus and Bus Éireann services.

Bus services in the capital have been operating today with some delays but the expected worsening conditions means the decision has been taken to suspend services tomorrow.

The decision was announced following a meeting of the National Emergency Coordination Group.

Schools are also set to close in areas covered by tomorrow’s ‘status red’ warning – which covers Leinster and Munster and stays in place until Friday at noon.

Luas and Irish Rail services will be operating but at a “constrained service”, finishing between 12pm and 2pm.

Met Éireann has issued a red alert snow-ice warning for Munster and Leinster, warning that ‘blizzard-like’ conditions are expected.

“Our services are primarily operating on main roads only due to poor road conditions,” Dublin Bus said in its latest update.

“Customers should be aware that services may also experience delays.”

Bus Éireann said there were “major disruptions across the country due to deteriorating weather conditions”.

Bus Éireann & Dublin Bus services cancelled tomorrow in Leinster, Munster

The 2018 Living Wage rate is €11.90 per hour. The Living Wage is set by the Living Wage Technical Group based on research identifying the Minimum Essential Standard of Living (MESL) in Ireland, conducted by the VPSJ.

The hourly Living Wage rate is the average gross salary required by full-time employed adult (without dependents) to afford a socially acceptable minimum standard of living across Ireland.
Through its budget standards research the VPSJ recognises the inadequacy of the National Minimum Wage for many household types. Earnings below the Living Wage do not allow for a Minimum Essential Standard of Living, and means individuals are faced with having to do without essentials in order to make ends meet.

The ongoing and unsustainable increase in rents has again pushed up living costs, in the last year. The 20c increase in the hourly Living Wage has been mainly driven by the current housing crisis and the associated increases in rent levels.

Aside from housing, the overall cost of the minimum essential needs of a full-time single worker fell in the last year. The cost of food, clothing, health insurance and transport all fell in 2018. While home energy costs increased notably (5.2%), this was not enough to offset the reduction in costs for other areas of need. Additionally, changes to the Universal Social Charge (USC) increased net pay for a person earning the Living Wage, when compared to 2017.

These savings are wiped out by rising rents. The overall cost of a socially acceptable minimum standard of living increased by an average of 2.5% for a single full-time worker without dependents, over the past year.

In Dublin, rent now accounts for effectively half (49.6%) of a single person’s minimum living costs, and increased by over €21 per week since 2017. Rents have continued to increase outside of Dublin also, in the last year housing costs for a Living Wage worker increased by an average of 10.9% across Ireland.

If housing costs had not increased to such a degree the Living Wage rate would not have increased in 2018.

To date, the full impact of rising rents has been counter balanced, somewhat, by falling costs in other areas of essential expenditure, for example food and transport. It is unlikely that such price reductions will continue to act as a break on increases in the Living Wage needed in coming years. Consequently, increases in the cost of a minimum standard of living, driven by rising rents, could necessitate further increases in the Living Wage in order to keep pace.

During the work placement you will receive further training, mentoring and company support to build your professional and technical skills.

Work placements are an opportunity to show your strengths and potential. They provide recent experience for your CV and allow you to familiarise yourself with the work practices of today’s technology companies. They also give you insight into job roles and positions opening up in our sponsor companies.

All of our work-placements are paid at internship rates. This allows you to cover the cost of childcare, travel and any other basic costs associated with your work placement. A specialist joinery company in Co Derry is to create more than 50 jobs as it celebrates its 30th year in business with a £5 million expansion project.
The <a href="https://www.irishtimes.com/topics/topics-7.1213540?article=true&amp;tag_company=Specialist+Joinery+Group">Specialist Joinery Group</a>, which is owned by the O’Hagan family, is planning to recruit new staff to help grow its business primarily in Britain and Europe.
The company, which was set up by John B O’Hagan with just 10 people, has grown to become a major employer on a three acre site outside Maghera. The family business hopes its latest investment will help it meet a “rising demand” from tier one contractors.
“The business has grown rapidly since our last major investment in 2013, resulting in the need for more capacity to meet our customer’s needs,” Mr O’Hagan. “We remain intensely export focused, as well as maintaining our position as a market leader on the island of Ireland.
“Over the past 30 years in business the company has delivered an outstanding portfolio of major projects for leading law practices, pharmaceutical companies, universities and hospitals as well as working for some of the world’s most distinguished brands; Estee Lauder, Google, Rolls Royce, AECOM and Amazon.”
Invest NI has offered the Specialist Joinery Group financial support totalling £468,000 towards its latest investment project, this has been part funded by the European Regional Development Fund.

Specialist Joinery Group to create 50 jobs in Derry

Investment of €5m to create the Vaults in the John’s Lane area, which opens in July
A new tourist attraction in Dublin city centre is to create 50 new jobs following a €5 million investment.
The attraction, called the Vaults, will be located in the John’s Lane area of Thomas St and opens in July.
The €5 million is being spent on converting the old Augustinian St John’s National School into a series of theatrical sets with live actor-led performances.
The initiative is being developed by Frontier Entertainment, which is driven by former broadcaster Paul Blanchfield and producer Gerald Heffernan with the creative involvement of playwright Peter Sheridan.
“The show consists of thrilling special effects, dark humour, moments of pure fun and lots of audience participation,” said Frontier Entertainment.
Just over half the jobs will be made up of actors, making the attraction the Republic’s largest employer of full-time performing artists.
The remaining jobs will focus on front of house, food and beverage, retail sales and merchandising assistants, technical specialists, and makeup and wardrobe specialists.
The Vaults will offer up to 30 shows per day depicting scenes and characters from 800 years of Irish history. Each scene is played in a 360-degree theatrical set dressed with props, a range of lighting, and sound and special effects.

Enjoyable and stimulating
Frontier Entertainment chief executive Paul Blanchfield said the aim was to “quickly become the number one thing to do in Dublin with a theatrical attraction”.
“Our research shows people want better experiences, more involvement and the Vaults entertainment model makes this happen in a big way,” he said.
“You will have a wonderful time with your friends and family at the Vaults and in an increasingly distracted mobile device driven world where adults want a more experiential, enjoyable and stimulating escapist experience, we’ve built it to do just that.
“We’ve put together a team of highly skilled professionals in staging and set design to create for guests a stunning walk through journey of real and imagined events in Irish history with a twist.
“We are in a prime location to add to Dublin’s €2 billion tourism and leisure offering where over 1.7 million adults and families attended arts related events last year.”
Mr Blanchfield said the business was based on “rethinking what culturally curious domestic and overseas guests are searching for and receive from Dublin’s current paid attractions”.

Fancy becoming a taxi driver? Now’s your chance.
The National Transport Authority (NTA) in Ireland is looking to recruit 1,600 taxi drivers as part of a major recruitment drive this year.

The NTA says it wants to attract customer-centric women and men with a desire to work for themselves and provide positive taxi experiences to the travelling public.

800 new taxi drivers were recruited by the NTA in 2017, a figure it is looking to double in 2018 to add to the 26,000 people currently licensed to drive a taxi in Ireland.

NTA CEO Anne Graham said: “There are about 26,000 drivers licenced to drive a Small Public Service Vehicle in Ireland.

“That might sound like a lot, but they are not all available all of the time, which means there can be shortages at certain periods particularly at peak hours and weekend nights.

“Last year we recruited about 800 new drivers into the sector, and with this campaign, we would like to double that in 2018.”

An advertising campaign will be rolled out across broadcast, online and print media starting on Monday, 26 February; a clean driving licence is all that’s needed to apply.

To obtain an SPSV Driver Licence
 SPSV Driver Licenses are only granted to people who;

<ul>
 	<li>Hold an Irish driving licence – Class B or higher, free from disqualification and free from endorsement (including penalty points) – or an equivalent licence from an EU or EEA Member State or another recognised state. If the latter, you will be required to include with your application a certified stamped letter from the relevant Embassy stating the licence is true and valid. Alternatively, you may be entitled to exchange your driving licence for a full Irish driving licence. Please contact An Garda Síochana for further information;</li>
 	<li>Pass the SPSV Driver Entry Test which is designed to verify good knowledge of the SPSV Regulations, familiarity with good practice in the industry, and good knowledge of the chosen area of operation;</li>
 	<li>Are considered by An Garda Síochána to be suitable persons to hold SPSV driver licences following background checks with local and national police bodies;</li>
 	<li>Are tax cleared with the Irish Revenue Commissioners. Please ensure that the name held with Revenue is identical to the name on the licence application you submit. You can show that your tax affairs are up to date by producing a current print out of your tax clearance certificate. NTA will verify this information directly with Revenue at the appropriate time; and</li>
 	<li>Are over 18 years old.</li>
</ul>
 To Apply you must;


 	<li>Study for the <a href="https://www.nationaltransport.ie/taxi-and-bus-licensing/taxi/spsv-driver-licensing/spsv-entry-test/)">SPSV Driver Entry Test</a> and when you are ready to sit both the Industry Knowledge Module and the Area Knowledge Module, contact the SPSV Information Line – 0761 064 000 – to arrange to take the SPSV Driver Entry Test (€90) at one of 5 test locations around the country, at a time and location that is convenient to you. Achieve an SPSV Skills Development Certificate;</li>
 	<li>Complete a PSV15 application form available from your local Garda station</li>
 	<li>Contact the SPSV Information Line – 0761 064 000 – to pay the €250 SPSV Driver Licence Fee. The licence is normally valid for five years. We will issue you with a receipt for this fee. (Note that this fee is non-refundable: you should pay it only if you are confident that you can satisfy all the conditions for licensing).</li>
 	<li>Obtain three identical colour photographs, meeting the following requirements:

 	</li><li>measure approximately 10cm by 7cm;</li>
 	<li>not more than 6 months old;</li>
 	<li>full front view of the subject’s head, as he or she would normally appear;</li>
 	<li>sharp, clear image, taken against a plain white or light grey background;</li>
 	<li>no sunglasses; tinted glasses may be worn provided they do not obscure the person’s eyes;</li>
 	<li>no military or police uniforms; and</li>
 	<li>only head coverings worn for religious reasons are permitted; hair bands are prohibited.</li>


 	<li>Submit the PSV 15 application form in person to the Garda station nearest to your home along with:

 	</li><li>The receipt for your licence fee provided by NTA;</li>
 	<li>Your SPSV Skills Development Certificate provided by NTA;</li>
 	<li>A printout of your electronic tax clearance certificate along with your tax clearance access number provided by Revenue;</li>
 	<li>Your three identical photographs;</li>
 	<li>Your standard driving licence;</li>
 	<li>Details of any other occupation in which you are engaged, including name and address of employer (if relevant), and, if that other occupation involves driving, evidence that you have informed the employer of your intention to apply for an SPSV driver licence;</li>
 	<li>A written undertaking that you will not drive an SPSV for more than 11 hours on any three consecutive days;</li>
 	<li>A declaration that your health does not materially affect your ability to drive an SPSV, and that you are not taking drugs or medication that would be likely to impair your ability to drive safely;</li>
 	<li>A declaration that you have not been convicted of any of the offences specified in section 30(3) or the Schedule to the Taxi Regulation Act 2013; and</li>
 	<li>Any other documents requested by An Garda Síochána.</li>



What Happens Next;

Your application will be processed by An Garda Síochána. The process includes an assessment of you as a suitable person to hold an SPSV driver licence (vetting). This may take up to twelve weeks to complete, occasionally longer depending on the checks to be completed. All queries in relation to your application should be directed to An Garda Síochána as the SPSV Driver Licensing authority.

If your application is successful, An Garda Síochána will issue you with a paper SPSV driver licence and they will inform NTA. We then issue you with the secure driver identification cards that you are required to keep with you at all times while you are operating as an SPSV driver.

If you are issued with an SPSV driver licence, you are entitled to drive any of the categories of SPSV (taxi, hackney or limousine). The vehicle you drive must be licensed as an SPSV.
