Advice for those at the start of their career journey on how to successfully move from student life to the working world.Have you recently graduated? Are you grieving the loss of your old student life? Are you wondering what it will be like to be a fully fledged member of the working world?I hate to break it to you, and as patronising as it might sound, you really are about to enter the real world, one that will bring a whole load of new lessons. So remember, just because the relentless exam process has finally stopped for you, your learning hasn’t. Far from it.Quite frankly, the prospect of making this life-changing transition can feel terrifying. But it doesn’t need to be. I want to share with you how you can successfully transition from university, college or school to working life – and get your career off to the best start possible Accept that everything is going to changeFrom now on, your life is going to be different in pretty much every way. You’ll have to get used to early mornings, possibly commuting and not going out partying on a Wednesday night, which might mean your social life isn’t perhaps as fun or wild as it once was – during the weekdays, anyway.You may well have moved back in with your parents again or have even moved to a new city, meaning your home life will change too. You must do your best to accept and even embrace these changes. Try to see this change as an opportunity for personal growth and learning, instead of a negative thing.You’ve dealt with change before Remember, you’ve managed to deal with the unsettling feelings that come with change in the past, so you’ll adapt quickly again this time. Think back to when you first started university. Everything about your life changed overnight, but you quickly managed to settle in, in what felt like the blink of an eye.Adjusting to the changes that come with starting your new job is no different. You are more adaptable than you think, so draw some confidence from that as you prepare to enter the next chapter of your life. Understand these changes are only temporarily unsettling, and you will quickly form new habits, schedules and rituals, and importantly, start to enjoy your new life.Keep an open mindI’m sure you’ve long wondered what the ‘corporate world’ is really like, being an eager spectator from the outside, waiting for your time to enter it. You’ve probably formed some strong assumptions over the years – both good and bad – from family, friends, lecturers, careers advisers, even TV programmes and films.Of course, some of these assumptions will be more accurate than others. So, try to keep an open mind as you embark on your first job, free from preconceived ideas about what it will be like.Be patient and persevereIf you’re about to start your first proper job, some of your responsibilities will likely be relatively admin-based, at least to begin with. This won’t be the case forever, so try to understand and appreciate that from the outset, instead of feeling unmotivated or dejected.As you climb your career ladder and become more senior, your responsibilities and tasks will become more interesting and advanced. So, be patient, stay motivated and persevere.Your first job won’t be your lastIt’s important to understand that your first job won’t be your last one, for the simple reason that we’re all living and working for longer than we have ever done in the past.So, if your first job isn’t everything you thought it would be, don’t worry too much. This is just the first stage of your career journey – you have a wealth of experiences ahead of you. Take as much as you can from your current role, and then move on.Don’t compare yourself to your friendsIn the era of social media, when it feels as if everyone is on a quest for more ‘likes’, it can be easy to start comparing yourself to your friends from university. This isn’t healthy and it’s certainly not helpful.Instead of scrolling through their social feeds, talk directly to your friends – ideally in person – about how they are transitioning from student to working life. You will find that most of them will be in the same boat as you, which can be reassuring and can also give you a sense of perspective.Remember that social media can be deeply deceptive, as people only tend to share the things on their social media profiles that they wish others to see.Try not to feel intimidatedDuring your time as a student, the only people you probably would have come across regularly who were in a more ‘senior’ position to you were your lecturers. The world of work can be a whole different ball game. You’ll almost certainly come across people who are much older than you, and in much more senior positions – possibly positions that you might aspire to be in one day.Try not to feel intimidated by this, instead see it as an opportunity to learn. Remember that even the most senior person in the company was once in a similar position to the one you’re in right now. Everyone has to start somewhere. In any case, it’s very likely that one day you’ll be in their shoes!Realise that you’ll be expected to pick things up quicklyOne thing you’ll have probably learned during your time in education is that you can’t expect to be spoon-fed if you want to be successful. Much the same can be said if you’re to succeed in the world of work. You will almost certainly be expected to get to grips with the responsibilities of your new role relatively quickly.Of course, your new employer will help you do this, but it’s also important that you personally commit to proactively learning and working hard, particularly as you’re settling in and finding your feet.Also, you have learned heaps of transferrable skills at college or university (things like self-motivation and tenacity, time management, the ability to work under pressure, personal development and communication) so put these to good use as you make the transition into full-time paid work.Remember, it will typically take you three to six months to feel truly settled and adept in your role, so don’t put unnecessary pressure on yourself either.Have the confidence to ask questions and share your ideasYou may have reached what you consider to be a high level of knowledge in your degree subject over the last few years of studying, but when you start out in the world of work, you’ll soon realise you don’t know everything. In fact, you’ll sometimes feel like you don’t know anything.Again, though, this is no reason to allow your confidence to be battered down. Quite the opposite, in fact – employers appreciate young graduates for their curiosity, energy and eagerness to learn, not to mention the fresh and new perspectives they often bring. So, if you do find yourself bubbling with exciting ideas when you join a business, don’t be afraid to suggest them.Perfect your email and telephone etiquetteThis might seem like an obvious point, but it’s one that is often under-appreciated by graduates. You will be expected to adjust the way you communicate when in a corporate working environment.It’s therefore a good idea to familiarise yourself in advance with the key points of professional email and telephone etiquette, such as the importance of introducing yourself if you haven’t spoken to or emailed that person before and responding to stakeholders in a professional and timely manner.Prepare to have less free timeWhile your income is likely to go up as a result of your first job, the amount of free time you have will almost certainly go down – you’ll no longer have those long summer holidays, for starters.However, the commencement of this new chapter of your life is also a great opportunity to start using your time more wisely, including carefully planning what you do in the evenings, as opposed to the random jaunts to the pub or club that might have been typical of your student days.To start with, you might feel like all you’re doing is working. However, once you get used to your elevated hours spent earning your own money, you’ll realise there’s a lot that can be done after 5pm and during the weekends.You will have different people in your lifeEntering the world of work means meeting a lot of people who will probably be very different to those you’ve come across before. Whereas university lectures were likely often full of people of a very similar age generation and outlook on the world, your new work colleagues will probably be very different.This isn’t something that should scare you – it is actually a good thing. You might not expect to become good friends with someone who is 10 years older than you, but you’ll soon realise that you have a lot more in common with your co-workers than you first think.Bear in mind that the contacts you make now will probably stay with you throughout your career and will therefore be fundamental to your success both now and in the future. In short, these people you might not initially think you can easily relate to, may be vital in helping to build the foundations of your career.Establish healthy habitsIt can be so easy to fall into less-than-healthy habits during your first weeks and months in your first job. After all, you’ll be ‘on the go’ all the time and everything else seems to take a backseat. You may have also inherited some unhealthy habits from your time at university – I’m referring to things like staying up too late when you need to get up early to go to work or allowing a sedentary lifestyle to take over if you work in an office role.So, be sure to embed good habits from the beginning, including eating well, exercising, resting and relaxing – doing this will help you establish, and maintain a healthy work-life balance. Committing to healthy habits early on will also help you to not only adjust better to this drastic change in your life, but also perform at your best in your first job, keep you motivated and feeling less stressed.The transition from student life to the world of work can understandably feel intimidating and overwhelming – but it really doesn’t have to be this way. The job application is open to anyone, including people from Ireland, but there is a catch.Applicants must be over the age of 18 and need only apply if they “love TikTok” or “have a love-hate relationship with it”. The Office of Public Works (OPW) are recruiting up to 250 staff, including a large number of high-value engineering roles, over the next 12 months. The ongoing and accelerated recruitment campaign comes as a result of the OPW’s increased funding secured under the National Development Plan (NDP) 2021 – 2030.Under the NDP, the OPW has been allocated €2.457 billion, including €99 million from the EU under the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (NRRP). Budget 2023: Workers on €50,000 to save €500 under plans to expand highest tax bandsNegotiations are ongoing about the introduction of a new credit for renters and a reduction paid by landlords on rental income.Workers will save at least €500 a year on average, under Budget plans to expand income bands for the highest rate of tax.Finance Minister Paschal Donohoe is set to increase the 40pc income tax band by €2,500, meaning workers will not have to pay the higher rate on any earnings below €39,300.The move will lead to significant savings for taxpayers – with a single person earning €50,000 taking home at least an extra €500 a year under the plan agreed by the Coalition parties.Changes to tax credits are also expected to put more money in workers’ pockets on top of the changes to the income tax bands.Meanwhile, negotiations are ongoing about the introduction of a new tax credit for renters and a reduction in tax paid by landlords on rental income.Organisations representing property owners have called for the tax rate on rent to be reduced to 25pc from 50pc to stop landlords exiting the rental market.The €2,500 increase in the income tax band would be the highest in more than a decade and goes some way to achieving Fine Gael’s pledge to make the entry point for the higher rate of tax €50,000.In last year’s Budget, Mr Donohoe increased the income band for the 40pc rate by €1,500.Under plans being finalised by the Government, 20pc tax rate will be applied to all income under €39,300.However, the Budget plan signals bad news for Tánaiste Leo Varadkar’s proposal to introduce a third income tax band with a 30pc rate.Mr Varadkar has continued to publicly insist his idea is still under consideration, but senior Government source say it will not be introduced in this Budget.A recent report by the Government Tax Strategy Group said increasing tax bands by €2,200 for the higher rate while hiking tax credits by €75 would benefit 1.9 million taxpayers.The Government has more than €1bn to spend on tax cuts in next Tuesday’s Budget but this has to cover the cost of extending tax reductions introduced during the year due to the cost of living crisis sparked by the Russian invasion of Ukraine.This includes extending the reduction of excise duty on petrol and diesel over the coming months but the cuts on motor fuels are not expected to be kept in placed indefinitely.Excise duty on petrol was reduced by 15c and on diesel by 10c.The Government is also examining how to off-set forthcoming increases on carbon taxes, which are due to come into place on October 12 and will also lead to an increase in petrol and diesel prices.Senior Fine Gael figures are anxious to delay or offset the tax, which will increase the price of a 60-litre tank of diesel by €1.48 and a similar tank of petrol by €1.28.Carbon tax increases on home heating oil do not come into effect until May every year and there is a suggestion in Government that the same could be done with the tax on fuels.Separately, there are high-level Budget talks ongoing over how to support businesses coming under financial pressure due to the energy crisis.Senior officials are trying to draft a scheme to support businesses that are most in need of Government assistance due to the rising cost of electricity.However, there is difficulty in designing a scheme targeted purely at businesses.Source and read more <a href="https://www.independent.ie/business/budget/budget-2023-workers-on-50000-to-save-500-under-plans-to-expand-highest-tax-bands-42005751.html">HERE</a>

It is divided into three nine-month rotations, providing participants with industry experience across the various departments in the biopharmaceutical manufacturing business. The civil service is committed to championing the development of an inclusive and diverse
workforce that reflects modern Ireland and the people we serve. It is recognised that members
of the Traveller and Roma communities have traditionally been underrepresented in
workplaces, including in the civil service.
The development of an internship scheme to provide members of the Traveller and Roma
communities with paid work experience opportunities in the civil service is in line with
commitments under the National Traveller and Roma Inclusion Strategy, the National
Pathways to Work Strategy and is a key recommendation of the Oireachtas Joint Committee
on Key Issues affecting the Traveller Community that was chaired by Senator Eileen Flynn.
The paid internships will be for a period of 12 months with a participating government
department or office at either clerical officer (CO) or executive officer (EO) level. Interns will
be assigned a workplace mentor while on the scheme. They will also benefit from practical
on-the-job experience, as well as the opportunity to develop professionally and personally
through participation on approved training courses. A network of participating interns will also
support each other during the year.
As well as these benefits, on successful completion of a paid internship, interns will be well
placed to apply and compete for future recruitment competitions for permanent roles across
the civil and public service.
For the Pilot Internship Scheme, it is anticipated that a total of 12 internship positions will be
made available – 9 at Clerical Officer level and 3 at Executive Officer level.
This competition is for internship opportunities at Clerical Officer level and there is a separate
competition for more senior internships opportunities at Executive Officer level being
undertaken at the same time.
What is the Civil Service?
The civil service is at the heart of Irish society. Employing nearly 42,000 people in over 40
government departments and offices, everything we do impacts our country, and most
importantly, our people. The civil service has a broad and wide-ranging set of responsibilities to support the work of
the government in developing policy options and legislation to address major national issues.
The service also plays a key role in co-ordinating and delivering our broader public services
and helps to manage the economy.
What will the internship roles involve?
The grade of clerical officer is the entry grade for the civil service (See Appendix 1). Clerical
Officers are employed in all government departments and offices with a wide range of duties.
The nature of the work carried out by a clerical officer may vary depending on the business
being conducted by the employer concerned. It will involve clerical/administrative tasks as
may be assigned to the employee from time to time. The following reflects the typical duties
of a clerical officer:
• General clerical work, e.g. filing, photocopying, processing correspondence, reception
desk duties, etc. under the supervision of a designated manager.
• Communicating and dealing with the public/customers, e.g. responding to queries and
providing information face-to-face, by telephone or via email.
• Working as part of a team in delivering services.
• Supporting line-managers and colleagues.
• Providing the highest quality standards in customer service.
• Using Information Technology on a daily basis, e.g. word processing, spreadsheets,
database, email and internet.
• Maintaining high quality records in a thorough and organised manner.
• Carrying out routine accounts work.
• Approaching work in a careful and methodical manner, displaying accuracy at all times,
even when conducting routine/repetitive work.
• Checking all work thoroughly to ensure it is completed to a high standard.
• Any other duties deemed appropriate.

Am I eligible to apply for this paid internship?
To be eligible to be considered for this internship, applicants by the closing date, must satisfy all the following requirements:
• Identify as a member of the Traveller or Roma community
• be at least 17 years of age
• satisfy the citizenship requirements
• have a good general standard of education (you do not need a Leaving Certificate)
• have relevant skills such as IT and team working
• be available and ready to undertake a full-time 12-month internship from 7
November 2022
• satisfy health, character and reference checks if offered a position satisfy garda vetting and security requirements if offered a position.

The Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine (DAFM) is a multi-functional organisation

includes farmers, taxpayers, consumers, food processers and other commercial operators,
those involved in sea fishing, forestry, bio-energy, research as well as diverse EU institutions,

The mission of the Department is to serve ‘the government and people of Ireland by leading,
developing and regulating the agri-food sector, protecting public health and optimising social,

Public Appointments Service (PAS)
Location of roles: Dublin
The Public Appointments Service is the centralised provider of recruitment, assessment and
selection services across the civil and public service. PAS is committed to providing a premier

local authorities use, in order to successfully employ suitable candidates. Additionally, PAS
support the appointment of candidates for consideration by Ministers for many state boards.

The Houses of the Oireachtas (the Irish Parliament) is made up of two Houses, Dáil Éireann
and Seanad Éireann. The Houses of the Oireachtas Commission (“the Commission”) is the
governing body which oversees the provision of services to the Houses and their Members by
the Houses of the Oireachtas Service (“the Service”) (the parliamentary administration) in
accordance with the Houses of the Oireachtas Commission Acts 2003-2015.
The Houses of the Oireachtas Service employs over 600 staff. It is the independent civil
service agency which supports the running of both Houses and provides administrative
services on behalf of the Commission as the governing authority. The mission of the Service
is to provide high quality parliamentary services to the Houses of the Oireachtas, their
committees, and the Members and to the Houses of the Oireachtas Commission. The values
of the Service are built around leadership, integrity and impartiality, excellence, accountability

What is the role of the Public Appointments Service (PAS)?
As the centralised recruiter for the civil and public sector, PAS will undertake the recruitment
and selection process, on behalf of the civil service participating employers, for this pilot
internship scheme.
On conclusion of the selection process, PAS will establish a panel of successful candidates
that may be offered a 12-month paid internship with a civil service employer commencing 7
November 2022. Successful candidates will be placed on the panel in an Order of Merit that
is based on how they performed in the selection process compared to other candidates.IMPORTANT NOTE
• As noted, there are a limited number of internships available under this Pilot Internship
Scheme. The number of applications is expected to exceed the number of internships
available. It is important to note, therefore, that not all candidates that apply or are
placed on a panel by PAS will be offered a 12 month paid internship with a Civil

The online marketplace said it has grown around 300pc each year since launching in 2018 and is now investing in expansion across the UK.Charity retail platform Thriftify is planning to grow its business further after receiving a €1.6m investment.This funding boost was led by the very first HBAN Impact Syndicate and included participation from Themvar VC along with angel investors such as former River Island CEO Ben Lewis.Thriftify plans to use the investment to expand its team by 20 over the next 12 months, with roles in the tech, e-commerce, sales and marketing sides of its business.The Irish start-up currently has offices in Dublin and London and employs 30 people full-time across Ireland, the UK, Moldova, India, Pakistan and Spain.Thriftify said the new roles will primarily be in sales and marketing as it plans to expand its online presence.The former SiliconRepublic.com Start-up of the Week enables charity shops to sell online and upload items from their stores to reach e-commerce customers.The fresh investment comes on the back of ongoing UK growth for Thriftify and major enhancements in its technology.
