Aldi is recruiting 20 new employees across its stores in Meath. Opportunities are now available for store manager, assistant store manager and store assistant positions at Aldi’s five Meath store - Kells, Ashbourne, Trim, Navan and Clonee.
Aldi Ireland also announced a new minimum rate of pay of €11.90 an hour, matching the Living Wage rate recommended by The Living Wage Technical Group. The move reaffirms Aldi’s position as Ireland’s highest paying supermarket and will make Aldi the first grocery retailer to pay The Living Wage Technical Group’s €11.90 rate. The new rate will be effective from the 1st February 2019. 
Aldi has been Ireland’s highest paying supermarket for over a decade with store employees earning up to €14.00 per hour in Ireland. Aldi has a clearly defined career path for store employees and many have progressed from Store Assistant through to Store Manager. It plans to recruit over 500 new staff across the country in 2019. One job interview is nerve-racking enough. Even though it’s great news to be called for a second one, the nerves can kick back in. Congratulations! You’ve been asked back for a second interview. Your first interview obviously went well and, as a result, the company is seriously considering you for the job and you are one step closer to securing it. However, you may feel unsure as to how this interview will differ from the first one, and how best to prepare. I’d like to provide some clarity on this by outlining the differences between the first and second interview, the purpose of the second interview, and what you can do to seal the deal.<h2>Who will you meet in your second interview?</h2>During your first interview, you will probably have met with someone from HR as well as your would-be boss. At the second interview stage, you will most likely be meeting someone more senior within the business, the person who will ultimately have the final say on the hiring decision.Prior to your interview, confirm with your recruiter who will be conducting the second interview. This will allow you to research this person beforehand online, be it on LinkedIn or via the company website. In doing this, you may discover that you have shared interests or backgrounds. You will feel more at ease in the interview room and overall increase the likelihood of building up a rapport with your interviewer.<h2>What will the format of the interview be?</h2>Don’t assume the format of your second interview will be the same as the first. You may be prepared for a one-on-one interview, only to be faced with a panel of stakeholders on the day. Check with your recruiter how many people are interviewing you and how the interview will be formatted.If you find out that you will be interviewed by a panel, then prepare accordingly. If the prospect of selling yourself to a group of stakeholders fills you with dread, then brush up on some tips for communicating confidence and presenting to a number of people. Practise in front of a group of friends or family beforehand so the real thing doesn’t feel as daunting.On the day of the interview, remember to interact with everyone in the room and not just those who are asking you the most questions. When answering these questions, make eye contact with everyone in the room.Remember everyone’s name and address them as such. I know impressing a panel of interviewers can seem daunting but if you can tackle this skill now, it will serve you well as you progress further in your career, not to mention heighten your chances of securing the opportunity in front of you. What is the interviewer trying to assess?The main differences between your first and second interviews lie in the objectives of the interviewer. Think objectively about what the interviewer is trying to find out here, and how you can provide them with what they are looking for. I’ve detailed below the key information the interviewer is most likely looking to attain during the second interview.<h5>Your level of interest in the role and organisation</h5>One thing the interviewer is looking to determine from your second interview is whether you are still as interested in this opportunity having met with the company and learned a bit more about the role. Your level of enthusiasm is directly correlated with how well you would perform if offered the role and how long you stay with the business so if you are still keen, make sure this comes across.Be ready to say what you enjoyed learning about the organisation upon meeting with them in your first interview. Also, use this opportunity to voice any questions that have cropped up in your mind since you last met with the company.<h5>Do you have the skills required?</h5>During your first interview, the interviewer will ask questions about your career highlights, key skills and attributes in order to check that they align with the key requirements for this vacancy. During this second interview, the hiring manager will be looking for more detailed evidence of these competencies, whether it’s through assessments or competency-based questions such as, ‘Describe a time when you showcased your x skills’ or, ‘How would you approach x situation?’Prepare for competency-based interview questions by revisiting the core requirements of the role, plus some examples of times you have showcased these skills. Now think about how you plan to implement these skills if successful in this role. You should also double-check with your recruiter to see if you are required to bring physical examples of your work or prepare any presentations.<h5>Are you the right fit?</h5>A large part of the second interview is to establish whether you’re a good fit for the company in terms of culture and personality. Therefore, you may be given a tour of the office at this stage to be introduced to potential colleagues. You could also be asked questions surrounding your hobbies and interests, how your friends would describe you, and what type of culture you prefer to work in.As you answer these questions, it is important that you remain authentic and honest. After all, the second interview is your chance to critically assess how good a fit this organisation is for you, too.With this in mind, perhaps prepare some of your own questions for the end of the interview, which could help provide insight into what life at this organisation is like and how much you would enjoy working there. These questions may include, ‘How would you describe the team?’ or, ‘What’s your favourite aspect of working at this organisation?’<h5>Addressing and resolving any reservations or doubts</h5>The interviewer may be looking to use the second interview to overcome some of their reservations from the first interview. So, how can you determine what these reservations may be?Try and recall any recurring questions that they asked multiple times but phrased in different ways. This may be reflective of a concern that they were trying to clear up. Was there anything that you struggled to answer? You can also ask the recruiter for feedback surrounding this.What about any skills gaps or areas of the job that you aren’t fully equipped to do? Consider whether you could teach yourself this skill in advance, or commit to learning it in the near future, even if it’s in your own time. You should also outline that you are a fast learner and keen to develop yourself, and give examples of times when you have quickly upskilled yourself in the past.Once you have an inkling of what the interviewer’s doubts may be, you can prepare to counter them in the second interview.<h5>Your availability and salary</h5>Lastly, the second interview can often be the stage during which the interviewer is looking to know your notice period and salary expectations. Have this information ready. If you are unsure of how to negotiate your salary, check out our advice surrounding this topic.<h2>What are the next steps?</h2>At the end of your second interview the interviewer should confirm the next steps but if not, you can politely ask. What to expect in a second interview

Over 2,500 apprentices will be needed annually to tackle the skills shortages in the construction industry, according to the industry&#39;s representative body. Today the CIF launched a new sponsorship scheme to boost the number of apprenticeships being offered to young people.Construction companies throughout the south gathered at a briefing in Cork yesterday to learn more about how they can join forces to increase the amount of young people entering apprenticeships in the sector. An Apprenticeship Sharing Scheme will now be run right across the country following a successful Pilot.CIF members are working to create co-ops whereby a number of construction companies choose to work collaboratively to provide training for new apprentices throughout the industry. The Shared Apprenticeship Scheme differs from the traditional model in two ways, firstly it allows direct employers and co-op members who may not be specialists in the appointed trade, but do employ skilled sub-contractors, to arrange for the training required under the guidance of the Co-Op. And secondly, co-op members will be able to move the apprentices between their companies to ensure continuity of engagement and training should one area or particular project become more or less busy than another.“We are seeking the support of construction companies throughout the southern region and across Ireland for the Apprenticeship Sharing initiative. This is an industry effort to grow the numbers of apprentices registering to the wet trades, which are sadly lagging at this time. In 2015/16 my company was part of a pilot of this sharing initiative and we deemed it to be a success.Now, SOLAS have agreed to extend this project and I am calling on members to form consortia of three to four companies and start registering apprentices under the scheme. This is a great opportunity for industry to seek to address the low numbers in the wet trades (bricklaying, plastering and Painting &amp; decorating).” According to Dermot Carey, Director Safety and Training, CIF, the scheme is one approach which those in the industry can take to address the skills challenges currently being faced by the sector, particularly when it comes to the wet trades.“Ireland faces the challenge of generating the 112,000 additional employees required up to 2020 to deliver the targets set out in both the housing strategy and the public capital programme,” Dermot Carey said.“There is an urgent need for Government and industry to collaborate in attracting more people into the industry and to invest in construction skills training. The alternative is that we will fail to meet these targets, our housing crisis will continue and our infrastructure deficit will stall economic progress. This is a huge threat to Ireland and the long-term capacity of the construction industry.We need to address this by attracting people back into the industry from the live register, through our education system and by reaching out to those members of the diaspora with construction experience and upskilling our existing workforce. We also drastically need to address the apprenticeship system, to ensure that we have a steady stream of skilled employees to sustain the construction activity our economy and society requires. This Apprenticeship Sharing Scheme is just one very practical step we are making in this journey.The construction sector is the principal industry sector in Ireland for the employment of apprentices. At its height, the sector employed nearly 27,000 (92%) of apprentices. Following the decline of the economy from 2008 onwards, this number fell to a low of circa 7,000 in 2013. However, the Irish construction industry has been hiring at a rate of 1000 additional employees a month since 2013.In 2016, the CIF launched an innovative, ‘Shared Apprenticeship Scheme’ pilot in conjunction with SOLAS, which allowed a number of member companies to take on apprentices as part of a consortium. The scheme gave participating companies the ability to share apprentices with other members if the pace of work lessened, providing consistent training and work experience for the apprentices involved.Four companies took part in this pilot scheme, taking on four apprentices between them and thanks to the recovery in the economy, the companies involved have not needed to share their apprentices, but nonetheless that safety net was there for these companies and it gave them the confidence to take on these apprentices once again. One of the companies had never taken on an apprentice before and they found it so beneficial that they started taking on apprentices in their own right also. The scheme is currently being rolled out across Ireland and while it is not going to be the only solution to the low numbers of apprentices that we are experiencing, it will certainly be part of the solution.” Conor O’Connell, Regional Director, Southern Region, CIF added that despite activity in the construction sector increasing, the industry is continuing to struggle with regard to apprentice sign ups figures.“Construction activity continues to increase in the region with many major projects commencing or due to commence shortly. The output of the sector will increase substantially in 2019 and we need more people to consider a career in construction. However, despite the upturn in construction there are not enough young people considering a trade,” Conor O’Connell said.“The wet trades in particular- such as plastering, painting and bricklaying- are struggling with apprenticeship numbers. The industry is changing significantly due to the impact of technology such as Building Information Modelling, but there will always be a need for these trades and they provide an excellent career opportunity for young people that wish to work in construction. There is incredible pride amongst tradespeople in their job and a great sense of satisfaction in the buildings they help to create and maintain. If you like working with your hands, these trades can provide an exceptionally rewarding career where every day you see the effects of your skill on the environment around you.”Following on from the 2015 / 2016 pilot scheme where the South East Branch of CIF / and SOLAS collaborated to run a pilot of the “Apprenticeship Sharing Scheme” it has been agreed to escalate the take up of this scheme nationally.CIF undertook to seek to put together a number of consortia, based on the same criteria as the initial pilot, to seek to increase the numbers of registrations to the plastering, painting &amp; decorating and bricklaying apprenticeships.The objective of the scheme is to develop a co-op, whereby, contractors can form a working group, by means of Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) – to register apprentices and work collaboratively to train these apprentices in the chosen trade, in accordance with the Rules of Apprenticeship.The difference between this and the traditional route is twofold;<blockquote><ol><li>the direct employer and co-op members are not specialists in the appointed trade, but do employ skilled sub-contractors, who are specialists and who will provide the training required – under the guidance of the Co-Op.</li><li>The co-op members can move the apprentices between their companies to ensure continuity of engagement (under certain conditions.)</li></ol>Benefits:By adopting this pro-active approach the following benefits will accrue;<ul><li>Increased registrations in seriously lagging trades</li><li>Development of a pipeline of indigenous skills</li><li>Provision of a broad range of experiences and certainty for apprentices – members of the co-op are established companies with strong project portfolios.</li><li>It is envisaged that engagement with sub-contractors will stimulate interest in the Apprenticeship system and the benefits it brings and so encourage direct involvement</li><li>A positive intervention by industry to promote upskilling and creating jobs and sustainable careers in the construction sector.</li></ul>Mechanism of Operation:<ul><li>All consortia members will register with SOLAS in accordance with the “SOLAS Employer Suitability.”</li><li>The number of apprentices to be employed by each consortia will be agreed amongst the participating companies.</li><li>Short term transfers between employers will be acceptable</li><li>Prior to Registration, the members of the co-op will provide SOLAS, the details and qualifications of the proposed Assessor Verifiers (either in house personnel or sub contractor personnel), that will be involved in the provision of on the job training, for approval.</li><li>All members of the Co-op would sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) confirming their commitment to cooperation &amp; People who are deaf or hard of hearing and interested in becoming primary school teachers are being invited to apply for a new teacher training strand, the first of its kind in Ireland, which begins next September at Dublin City University. The new strand, to be delivered within DCU&#39;s existing Bachelor of Education programme, will include a module in Irish Sign Language.It is being introduced initially on a pilot basis and will have six places. Those interested can apply through the current CAO process, which closes on 1 February. The places are being funded through a scheme which aims to increase the number of students with disabilities at third level. They are geared towards members of the deaf community who wish to become primary school teachers and work with deaf children.Apart from specialised modules such as one in Irish Sign Language, students on the new programme will study alongside hearing peers on the university&#39;s main Bachelor of Education programme. The higher-level Leaving Certificate Irish qualification that is required for other students will be replaced by a requirement of a similar level in Irish Sign Language. The four-year full-time undergraduate programme also includes a 30-week school placement. Announcing the new programme, Minister for Education Joe McHugh said the move was a hugely important step towards ensuring increased access and inclusion for all in the classroom.He said it would enable deaf children who use Irish Sign Language in primary school to fully access the curriculum by having teachers who are fluent ISL users. <h1></h1>by Jenny Darmody (Silicon Republic)Boyce Precision Engineering has opened its new manufacturing facility and announced plans to add 27 new jobs to its business.Portadown engineering firm Boyce Precision Engineering plans to almost double its workforce as part of a £6.9m investment.The company has today (21 January) officially opened a new manufacturing facility at Charlestown Road Industrial Estate on a site purchased from Invest Northern Ireland.The investment is part of a five-year project to increase its workforce, manufacturing capabilities and international sales.Boyce Precision Engineering will recruit for 27 new manufacturing jobs between now and 2022. This will generate more than £800,000 in additional annual salaries for the local economy.Invest NI offered the company more than £600,000 towards the construction of its new factory, purchase of machinery, job creation and staff training.The engineering firm specialises in producing machined precision component parts for the aerospace interiors and pharmaceutical sectors. This includes manufacturing, machine prototyping, and tool and mould production.Speaking at the official opening of the new facility, the company’s joint managing director Brian Boyce said: “This is an exciting time for us at Boyce Precision Engineering as we begin the next stage of our journey. In a recent survey over 51% of Irish workers admitted having ‘a lack of confidence’ when it came to applying for a new job. 42% ‘thought they didn’t have strong enough experience, while 18% ‘stated that they are scared of rejection and failure’.It was found that the majority of Irish workers don’t have the confidence to apply for a new job. The research was conducted by LinkedIn and found that a quarter (24%) of the research participants said that they are currently in a role that they are unhappy with or uninspired by. This was followed by better benefits like flexible working hours and healthcare (41%) and better work life balance (41%). <h1></h1><h2>Rollerblading and bike circuits to be included as staff recruitment to begin in June</h2><h2></h2>Decathlon plans nine outlets for Ireland, starting with BallymunRollerblading and bike circuits to be included as staff recruitment to begin in JuneFrench sports retailing giant Decathlon plans to open nine shops in Ireland over the next few years, beginning with a large outlet beside Ikea in Ballymun, north Dublin, where it has secured planning permission and will begin construction shortly.The retailer outlined its plan to bring more than 60 of its sports brands directly to Irish customers, and its Ballymun outlet will feature a rollerblading track, bike circuit and astroturf pitch.Known as the “Ikea of sports” for its large, warehouse-style outlets and enormous range of keenly priced sporting goods, Decathlon will, appropriately enough, open its first store adjacent to the Swedish big-box retailer in Ballymun.Decathlon acquired the 17,000sq m site, which has been used as an overflow car park for Ikea, for €4.3 million from Dublin City Council last September, and planning approval finally came through before Christmas.Bastien Grandgeorge, chief executive of Decathlon in Ireland, said a tender with a construction firm would be signed shortly, with work to commence soon after.
