<h2>Avoiding Emergency Tax when you start a new job!</h2>Congratulations if you’ve started a new job, but be sure to give you Personal Public Service Number (PPSN) to your new employer immediately when you start. Otherwise you will be deducted a high rate of emergency tax which could be as high as 40% and 8% Universal Social Charge.When you give your PPSN to your new employer, they will notify Revenue on-line that you have started working with them and will be able to make the correct deductions from your salary. If there&#39;s a delay Emergency Tax will kick in.From January 2019 a new system came into place that gives employers access to a Revenue Payroll Notification (NPN) for each employee so that they can immediately see what tax and USC they should deduct for the current year. The NPN ensures that they are using the correct credits and cut-off point for you.If this is your first job in Ireland you must sign in to <a href="https://www.ros.ie/myaccount-web/sign_in.html?execution=e1s1">myAccount</a> with Revenue.ie  to register your new job using the <a href="https://www.revenue.ie/en/online-services/services/paye-services/add-a-job-or-a-pension.aspx">Jobs and Pensions service</a>. <h2>What happens if you get deducted too much tax (Emergency Tax)?</h2>You should ensure that you have given your your PPSN to the right person and that the Accounts person or the Payroll Department have requested a Revenue Payroll Notification (RPN) on your behalf with Revenue.ie. You should get your Tax Refund really soon if you have provided all the necessary information to your employer.According to Revenue.ie if you give your PPSN to your employer you will be taxed under normal rules where you are allowed a single person’s rate band for the first four weeks of employment. You will be taxed at the standard rate (20%) on income up to the limit of the rate band. Any income above that rate band will be at the higher rate on any income above this. After four weeks, your full income will be taxed at the higher rate (40%).If you don&#39;t give your employer your PPSN or if the payroll person does not receive it on time, you will be taxed as if it were week 5 under &#39;normal emergency tax rules&#39; as above. <h2>Árainn Mhór (Arranmore) the largest inhabited offshore island in Co Donegal is looking for new new residents to boost its population.</h2>Its population has dropped to just 469 people and the island has recently invited more people particularly families to live on the island. The current inhabitants have also written open letters to the people of the United States and Australia, urging them to relocate there.New residents will be offered the chance to swap the hustle and bustle of big cities for the calm and beauty of Arranmore.The island has recently undergone huge technological advancement and has become the recipient of Ireland’s very first offshore digital hub.Not only are they offering new residents the chance of a delightful place to retire to, the community is trying to make the island a more attractive place for families and business people who work remotely.Arranmore now boasts of internet speeds that rival Dublin, London and New York City.Inhabitants on the Island list graphic designers, games developers, photographers and app developers as just some of the professionals who have made successful careers while working on the island.They say: “Your commute, no matter where you are, will only ever be five minutes. You’ll have the best diving in Ireland on your doorstep and seafood to rival the tastiest New England chowder.“There are fewer people here than would fit in a couple of Amtrak carriages, but enough musicians and good Irish whiskey to keep the party going well into the night,” the letter continued.The island is just five miles by three miles wide and is smattered with rocky cliffs, stretched beaches and sea caves.Historically, traditional industries like farming and fishing have dominated the island, but they’re not enough to keep young people from leaving.As a result, the population has been dropping rapidly for 30 years and the island is in danger of losing its structure.The island is twinned with Beaver Island in Lake Michigan. In the 1800s, families evicted from Arranmore relocated to Beaver island and most of the residents who live there today can trace their roots back to the Irish island.It’s hoped that with the advent of high-speed internet, which has changed the professional landscape of the island, and by reaching out to the likes of America and Australia for residents, Arranmore can attract enough people to not only keep the island’s population up, but also to transform it into one of Ireland’s most attractive places to live.Ringed by dramatic cliffs, cavernous sea caves and clean sandy beaches, the island measures just 9km by 5km. Irish is the main language spoken on Arranmore Island, although most residents also speak English. <h2>The People</h2>Last year the community welcomed back from Dublin, islander Fiona Ní Ghloinn, her American husband Jesse Smith, and their three daughters. For Fiona and Jesse the move was about a better lifestyle for their family. Stone sculpting was a hobby since his schooldays so he decided to give it a go and now carves beautiful bowls, boats and other pieces from the abundant stone on the island.The finishing touches for some of his work are floating candles he makes from local heather. Rushes are the raw material of Mike Glynn&#39;s work, he&#39;s a basket-maker who also creates artworks but his main interest is in passing his skills on.He and his wife, islander, Gráinne, have retired to Árainn Mhór, where Mike says, there is no such thing as ageism.He works with local transition year students and hopes that some will continue the craft on the island and use it as a means to stay living there. Mike is also planning to run workshops on basket-making for visitors and says he&#39;s hopeful about the future of the island, where, he says, there&#39;s a great sense of entrepreneurship.For Eamonn Bonner, that sense of entrepreneurship combined with the strong community spirit is key to securing the future of the island.Árainn Mhór has a naoinraí, two national schools and a secondary school and two ferry services operate daily between it and the mainland. It is also hoped the new developments with the digital hub will encourage more people to move to live on the Island and that it will create more jobs there.The ambition is to stimulate employment and reverse over a century of emigration that has seen the island&#39;s population drop to just 469 people. What a great Summer Camp for up and coming Radio Presenters!!!

<h2>A new 3 Year National Hairdressing Apprenticeship programme is currently in development and is expected to be launched around September 2019. The Apprenticeship will be certified by Quality and Qualifications Ireland at level 6 on the National Framework of Qualifications.</h2>The new nationally-recognised hairdressing qualification has been developed following a call from the industry for a formal apprenticeship programme in hairdressing.It is proposed that participants will have 80% on-the-job training with the employer and 20% off-the-job training with an education provider. The off-the-job training of apprentices will be free of charge, Education Providers do not charge for any part of this training.Apprentices will be supported in the workplace by Workplace Mentors nominated by the employer. The Mentors will guide the apprentice through their apprenticeship as part of a normal salon day or week. Mentors will be experienced hairdressers and will occupy a role in the workplace that corresponds to a senior hairdresser level. They will be appointed by the employer and approved by the Senior Training Advisor/Authorised Officer. Employers and Workplace Mentors will be briefed on the Workplace Assessment by the programme team in collaboration with the Consortium Steering Group. They will be trained to ensure that they understand their responsibility in relation to training and assessing an apprentice on-the-job, to industry and awarding body standard. They can be responsible for mentoring and assessing apprentices in the workplace.The Workplace Mentor needs to have 5 years post qualification experience and they do not need to hold a formal certificate in hairdressing. They will have to attend a one day Mentor training workshop provided by the Education and Training Boards free of charge.There are 2 steps in this process for Employers:The employer will have to become an approved SOLAS employer by contacting their local Education and Training Board to arrange a visit from the Senior Training Advisor/Authorised Officer as part of what is referred to as the ‘suitability to train’ process.Once the employer is approved by SOLAS, they will then be able to register their apprentice by completing the registration form and returning the documentation. This process will usually take between a week to ten days.Senior Training Advisors/SOLAS Authorised Officers are available to guide and assist employers through the approval and registration process.The National Apprenticeship Co-ordinator and local Education Training Board Programme Leaders are available to offer clarity and support where needed. Training and resource material is available for workplace mentors. Workplace mentors and employers are also offered assistance from the Senior Training Advisors/SOLAS Authorised Officers, Programme Leaders and the National Apprenticeship Co-ordinator as appropriate.The current scheduled date for completion of the development stage of the apprenticeship is September 2019. Great News for the Hairdressing Industry in Ireland

The Government is preparing legislation that would ban employers in the service industry from using tips to help pay workers&#39; wages and require businesses to display their policies on tipping.It follows criticism of some businesses that were not allowing staff to take home the full amount of tips they had received during a shift.Minister for Employment and Social Protection Regina Doherty said Ireland has a problem with ownership of tips that must be addressed.She said: &quot;The vast majority of employers are very good and recognise that a tip is a gift between the patron of the restaurant or hotel and the person that is giving them the service.&quot;But there are a small number of employers who seem to think that it&#39;s okay to take those tips and use them as part of wages for the employees or keep them for themselves.&quot;There has been a clear message sent out by every member of the Dáil and Seanad today is that is not on.&quot;James Larkin from Mullingar says he worked in three different restaurants and his tips were deducted in different ways.He said: &quot;A common occurrence was for 10% of your tips to be taken through breakages and that was whether you broke anything or not. Another way was that when you were in training none of your tips went to you.&quot;Other things would happen like tips would be taken if the till didn&#39;t balance at the end of the day which is a very common experience and at the end of it all you end up with little or none of your tips.&quot;Meanwhile, a Sinn Féin Bill, which aims to give restaurant workers a legal right to their tips, was passed in the Seanad today.However, the Government opposes this bill on the basis that a report earlier this year by the Low Pay Commission advised against primary legislation in this area.The LPC said that such a change could have unintended consequences, and end up in workers receiving even lower take home pay.Sinn Féin Senator Paul Gavan told the Seanad today that the Government&#39;s proposals do not go far enough.He said: &quot;The bill that you say you are going to produce, a bill which nobody had heard of until yesterday after eight years in Government, but you say there is a bill now in the offing, but it doesn&#39;t tackle the key legal issue to give hospitality workers a legal right to their tips and that&#39;s what we need.&quot;Mr Gavan said there was a wrong being done to workers in the sector and he said the Sinn Féin bill would address this.He said: &quot;This bill gives hospitality workers a right to their tips. That&#39;s at the heart of this bill and we know from research that one in three workers do not get their tips. The bill also requires restaurants to display their tipping policy.&quot;We believe that all workers who deliver a service and where a service charge is paid should get that fee.&quot;Yesterday, the chief executive of the Restaurants Association of Ireland said the organisation supports the minister&#39;s plan.Adrian Cummins said it was a workable solution for business owners that provides certainty for staff and transparency for customers.Earlier this year, the RAI advised its members to display their policy on tips and gratuities.The issue was also raised in the Dáil earlier this year when the tips policy at a restaurant in Dublin city centre was highlighted.At the time, Tánaiste Simon Coveney warned that it was illegal to calculate workers&#39; salaries by including customer tips in that figure.The Government said it expects to bring a memo to Cabinet on its proposals next week.Source; RTE

This brings Working Family Payment into line with other social assistance schemes. Arising from this Budget measure, approximately €9.1 million extra will be paid out annually, with affected customers benefiting by an average increase of €27.40 per week in their payment. Recent analysis undertaken by the Department of Employment Affairs and Social Protection showed that existing in-work supports, in particular, the Working Family Payment and the Back to Work Family Dividend, are very effective, and work well in assisting individuals to make the transition from unemployment into employment. The information campaign will run from today until the end of July on national and local media including print, radio, digital and Out of House including on the Luas and Dart and in train stations. The cost of the campaign is €120,000 (inc. VAT).The Working Family Payment is available to employees in private and public sectors. The Working Family Payment is not taxable and neither is it taken into account in assessment for a medical card or GP card.An employee who is getting the Working Family Payment may also be entitled to receive the Department of Employment Affairs and Social Protection’s Back to School Clothing and Footwear Allowance that is paid annually. The Department’s Back to Work Family Dividend and Working Family Payment can also be paid together and the Dividend will not be taken into account in the income test for Working Family Payment.The following table shows the family income that applies, depending on the family size. Over 200 jobs are to be created by Immedis, an Irish company that develops payroll and tax services and software for multinational companies. The new positions will be in tax, compliance, IT, software development, marketing, finance, and sales and will be based in Dublin and Kilkenny offices.The firm was founded in 2016 and is part of the Taxback financial technology group founded by entrepreneur Terry Clune.Immedis currently employs 170 people, but it has rapid growth plans and has just received a new investment of €25 million from Scottish Equity Partners (SEP).As a result, it plans to increase its workforce to 400 within 18 months, with recruitment getting under way immediately.The company hopes the expansion will position it to take a larger slice of the $43 billion global payroll and HR market. Among Immedis&#39; clients are Uber, Wayfair, First Derivatives, NYIT, DCC and Abbvie. In 2017 it announced a $10m acquisition of US international payroll company Expaticore.&quot;We are delighted to be partnering with SEP.
