Stena Line is running its first ever recruitment campaign because of staff shortages.The ferry company is looking for 60 employees to work on its Irish Sea routes mainly in the hospitality area.Traditionally jobs on board ferries were highly sought after but now the biggest Irish Sea operator is trying to entice workers with a campaign entitled &#39;A Life Less Ordinary&#39;.The Swedish company points out that its employees spend 50% of their lives off work and live on board for either one or two weeks at a time.Accommodation and meals are free while on board.Stephen Bryden the company&#39;s head of Onboard Sales and Services said January is traditionally the time of the year when people tend to evaluate their career paths.&quot;Whilst we appreciate that a life at sea isn&#39;t feasible for everyone, the challenges of the last few years have shone a light on a variety of jobs and careers which have struck a chord with a lot of people.&quot;He said the company is looking for onboard assistants and chefs.Stena provides a total of 238 weekly sailings between Ireland and Britain including passenger and freight services from Dublin to Holyhead, Rosslare to Fishguard and Belfast to Cairnryan and Liverpool.Dr Sarah Kieran lecture in Work and Employment Studies in the University of Limerick says problems in the hospitality industry result from the decimation brought by the pandemic.She said jobs in that sector might suffer from the perception of lack of security but staff shortages are not confined to that sector.Surveys have found that 41% of employees see their future outside their current company she pointed out and said that companies will have to look at the packages they are offering if they want to attract or retain staff. <h2>The Government has today approved future plans for the Pandemic Unemployment Payment (PUP) and has announced changes to the economic supports for businesses most impacted by recent public health restrictions</h2>(21/1/22)The new arrangements agreed for the PUP scheme are as follows:<ul><li>PUP will close for new applications on 22 January 2022 in line with the Government decision to lift restrictions.</li><li>With effect from 8 March 2022, anyone still in receipt of the PUP will move to a weekly rate of €208. This represents a four week extension on what was previously announced.</li><li>PUP recipients will start transitioning to standard jobseeker terms, and if eligible, will move onto a jobseeker payment effective from 5 April 2022.</li></ul>Speaking today, Minister Humphreys said:<blockquote>“The Pandemic Unemployment Payment has been an absolutely vital support for workers and their families.</blockquote><blockquote>“What was originally intended to be just a six week short-term payment will now last for over two years with over €9 Billion in payments issued to workers.</blockquote><blockquote>“In line with the widespread lifting of restrictions from tomorrow, the Government has today approved plans for the winding down of the PUP over the coming months.</blockquote><blockquote>“The decision to lift restrictions represents a hugely positive step which will see tens of thousands of people return to work over the coming weeks as the country begins to return to normal.”</blockquote><blockquote></blockquote><h2>Changes to Business Supports</h2>Also in other news for businesses, the Minister for Finance, Paschal Donohoe has today (Friday) announced changes to a number of the COVID support schemes available to businesses, in particular for those businesses that were most severely impacted by the public health regulations introduced last December.An extension to the Employment Wage Subsidy Scheme (EWSS) to support those businesses and a number of clarifications in relation to the Covid Restrictions Support Scheme (CRSS) and Tax Debt Warehousing Scheme were agreed by Government at the Cabinet meeting today.The legislative aspects associated with these changes will be addressed by primary legislation to be introduced in the coming weeks. In the meantime Revenue will update its guidance on each of the schemes shortly.<h2>EWSS</h2>As part of Budget 2022, the government set out the future direction of EWSS including its graduated exit strategy. These arrangements were subsequently enhanced in response to the public health situation, namely the extension of the enhanced rates of subsidy for a further two months (across December 2021 and January 2022) and the reopening of the scheme for certain businesses as announced on 9 and 21 December 2021 respectively.The government agreed today that businesses availing of EWSS that were directly impacted by the public health Regulations introduced last December, will receive additional support under the scheme for a further month to assist these businesses as they fully reopen and emerge from the restrictions.Such businesses will continue to receive the enhanced rates of subsidy for the month of February and the graduated step-down in subsidy rates, as previously announced, will be delayed by one month with such firms continuing to receive support under the scheme until 31 May 2022.From 1 February 2022, most businesses, apart from those that were directly impacted by the public health restrictions of last December, will move to the reduced rate of support of €203 per employee, followed by the flat rate subsidy of €100 per employee for the final two months the scheme of March and April 2022.It should be noted that the full rate of Employers’ PRSI will be reinstated with effect from 1 March 2022 for all businesses, as announced in Budget 2022 and legislated for in the Social Welfare Act 2021.<h2>Tax Debt Warehousing Scheme</h2>In relation to the Tax Debt Warehousing Scheme, and the decision by Government last month, to extend the period where tax liabilities arising can be warehoused to the end of Q1 2022, for all taxpayers eligible for COVID-19 support schemes, it has now been agreed that this date will be extended to 30 April 2022 to facilitate the two monthly VAT return for March/April.<h2>CRSS</h2>A number of clarifications were noted in relation to the CRSS as follows:as provided for under the scheme, an extra week, will be paid to businesses the week after the restrictions are lifted as an additional support to businesses as they reopen fullyfor newer businesses established during the period 13 October 2020 to 26 July 2021, the turnover from the date of commencement up to 1 August 2021 will be used for the purpose of calculating average weekly turnovercertain charities and sporting bodies that operate a hospitality/indoor entertainment business activity from their business premises, who meet the revised qualifying criteria of the scheme, are eligible to apply for the CRSS for the most recent period of restrictions (20 December 2021 to January 2022)The Minister for Finance, Paschal Donohoe TD said:“Today is an important day for our society and economy as we seek to ease the public health restrictions and reopen all sectors of our economy. The EWSS has been extremely successful in maintaining employment across the whole of our economy during this pandemic.&quot;It is now time to adjust our focus towards an exit from the scheme in a structured and orderly way. This is important in everyone’s interests - businesses, employees, the wider body of taxpayers – as the scheme cannot continue indefinitely. As such, most businesses will move to the reduced rates of EWSS subsidy from the 1st February 2022 onwards and continue on the exit path as previously announced until the scheme closes on 30 April 2022.&quot;However, I intend to provide additional support to those businesses that were directly impacted by the most recent public health regulations. Affected businesses will continue to receive the enhanced rates of support for a further month and the exit path from the scheme for such businesses will be delayed by a month.&quot;CRSS has been an important and successful support payable at times when businesses most needed additional help with their fixed costs, and has provided some €717 million in direct payments in respect of over 25,000 business premises since its introduction and over €13.4 million in payments to businesses directly impacted by the latest public health restrictions in place since 20 December.&quot;The facility to avail of the Tax Debt Warehousing Scheme has also offered valuable and practical liquidity support to businesses in difficult trading periods during the pandemic. The objective of this scheme is to allow firms some help to recover, thereby helping to guarantee their long-term economic viability and survival. This further extension will allow businesses who have been most impacted some additional time to recover before their tax liabilities have to be paid. Welcomed News as Covid Restrictions Lifted

An Garda Síochána have confirmed they will open their 2022 recruitment process &#39;in the coming weeks&#39; and they are set to recruit 800 new officers and 400 civilian support staff.The Government confirmed the plan before Christmas and An Garda Síochána posted recently to confirm that their application process will open shortly.They have made changes to the entry criteria recently to become a more diverse organisation with changes to their uniform policy and have removed the second language requirement. Previously members had to be proficient in two languages, one of which must be English or Irish. However proficiency will only be required in one language now, which can be English or Irish going forward. The Government says the changes will encourage a more diverse police force which will be much more representative of our diverse and minority communities. The establishment of the Garda National Diversity Forum has helped to drive the changes. Commissioner Drew Harris said recently that the plan is to bolster numbers in front-line policing and to become a more diverse force.&quot;There will be a significant focus in our recruitment campaign in reaching out to groups and individuals from these communities to encourage them to join An Garda Síochána. A new Irish Language Strategy has been developed by An Garda Síochána and will be launched early in 2022. The Strategy aims to strengthen Irish language services within An Garda Síochána and ensure compliance with statutory language obligations.The Minister continued:<blockquote>&quot;I want these new regulations to send out a message and to encourage interest from all communities across Ireland in a career with An Garda Síochána. Minister Donohoe announces further economic supports for businesses as they re-openFrom Department of FinancePublished on 1 June 2021Following the Government meeting today (Tuesday), the Minister for Finance, Paschal Donohoe, T.D., has announced the following set of measures to provide support to businesses as they re-open and resume normal trading:• The extension of the Employment Wage Subsidy Scheme to 31 December 2021;• The extension and enhancement of the Covid Restrictions Support Scheme to provide additional support to businesses upon re-opening and to give certainty to businesses still directly affected by public health restrictions;• A new additional business support scheme (Business Resumption Support Scheme or BRSS) for businesses with reduced turnover as a result of public health restrictions to be implemented in September 2021;• The extension of the tax debt warehousing scheme to allow the period where liabilities arising can be “warehoused” to be extended to the end of 2021 for all eligible taxpayers, with an interest-free period during 2022, and to include overpayments of EWSS in the scheme;• The Government agreed to the drafting of legislation to provide for these measures.These measures will provide certainty to businesses as public health restrictions are lifted and allow them to plan for the future as they re-open and resume normal trading.Employment Wage Subsidy Scheme:The EWSS continues to represent a substantial and key part of the Government response to the Covid-19 pandemic, supporting businesses, encouraging employment, and helping to maintain the link between employers and employees.As of the week ending 27 May, a total of €3.835 billion has been spent under the scheme of which €3.293 billion relates to direct subsidies and €0.542 billion relates to Employers’ PRSI foregone.For Q3, the Government has decided to broadly maintain the status quo for EWSS, including the enhanced rates of support and the reduced rate of Employers’ PRSI with a modification to widen eligibility.For Q4, the Government has approved the extension of the EWSS, however, it is considered too early yet to prescribe the precise operational parameters of the scheme that should apply for that quarter, and decisions in that regard would be taken closer to the time around the end of August / early September.Covid Restrictions Support Scheme:The Covid Restriction Support Scheme (CRSS) has been an extremely successful intervention by the Government to provide support to businesses whose customers are prevented from accessing their premises because of Public Health restrictions.The CRSS in its current form will be continued to the end of 2021 for the reducing number of businesses that are still directly affected by public health restrictions that may remain in place. The qualification criteria and payment rates will remain unchanged.The Government will also provide for an enhanced restart week payment – a single payment of three double weeks to businesses upon re-opening (subject to a maximum of €30,000). This will provide additional support to the businesses in restocking and making the necessary preparations to welcome their customers back in a safe manner.This enhanced restart payment is intended to incentivise them to exit the scheme and return to trading as early as possible.Business Resumption Support Scheme:As the economy re-opens, a further scheme is being introduced for vulnerable but viable businesses, particularly in sectors that were significantly impacted throughout the pandemic, even during periods when restrictions were eased.Businesses whose turnover is reduced by 75% in the reference period (1 September 2020 to 31 August 2021) compared with 2019 will be eligible. The scheme will not be restricted by location, rate-paying, or physical premises. It is expected that there will be a limited number of such businesses and recognised that it is important that such businesses are supported.Businesses who previously availed of other schemes such as SBASC and the Tourism Business Continuity Scheme for example as well as CRSS will be eligible to apply provided they meet the qualifying criteria.The BRSS will be administered by Revenue and will operate in a similar way to CRSS.Tax Warehousing:The tax debt warehousing scheme has provided approximately €2.3 billion of liquidity to Irish businesses at a time that they need it most. The scheme is now being extended to the end of this year, with no interest during 2022 and interest at a reduced rate of 3% thereafter.Speaking on the overall package of measures, the Minister said“The Government and I have committed on multiple occasions that there will be no “cliff-edge” to supports for business. The Irish Football Association’s annual Easter camps are moving online this year! Covid-19 restrictions mean the camps, usually held at various locations cannot be staged as they normally would.So the camps, in collaboration with TopTekkers, are going virtual! This Thursday and Friday (8 &amp; 9 April) at 10:30am, the Irish FA’s YouTube and Facebook platforms will host special coaching sessions to help kids hone their skills at home! And, it’s all completely free! Over the course of two days, Irish FA Foundation coaches Amanda Morton, Ben Crossley and Brendan Lynch will offer top tips on how kids can improve their game. There will also be lots of drills to watch and take part in, courtesy of TopTekkers. <h1>Minister Harris and Minister Collins announce €20 million capital funding to expand apprenticeship provision across further and higher education</h1>From Department of Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science Published on 26 March 2021Last updated on 26 March 2021Minister for Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science Simon Harris TD and Minister of State for Skills and Further Education Niall Collins TD have today (Friday) announced the roll-out of €20 million in capital funding to respond to the growing demand for apprenticeships.The funding will allow for a significant expansion in electrical, plumbing and carpentry places, and additional COVID-related capacity in electrical, plumbing, hairdressing and pipefitting places.Minister Harris said:<blockquote>&quot;Today’s investment of €20 million, to be provided via SOLAS and the Higher Education Authority (HEA), will fund the delivery of almost 4,000 additional craft apprentice places annually across further and higher education - helping to catch up on the lost provision in 2020, and to support the target increase of 1,450 registrations across all apprenticeships in 2021.</blockquote><blockquote>&quot;This investment reaffirms the government’s strong commitment to enhancing and expanding the apprenticeship system. Access to cutting edge equipment is key to positioning apprenticeships as a valued and attractive path to sought-after qualifications. A strong pipeline of craft apprentices is also critical in sustaining the construction sector and delivering on our ambitious national infrastructure plans.</blockquote><blockquote>&quot;The government will shortly consider a new Action Plan for Apprenticeships. It will set out new ways of structuring, funding and promoting apprenticeships, with a target of 10,000 new apprenticeship registrations per year by 2025. This compares with a 2019 registration figure of 6,177. By supporting additional apprenticeship places, the investment announced today will go some way towards mitigating the impacts of the pandemic, including requirements for smaller class sizes due to social distancing, and will also facilitate expansion for the longer term.</blockquote><blockquote>&quot;The forthcoming Action Plan will set out to place apprenticeships at the centre of the education and training system, increase the attractiveness of the programme to employers and learners of all ages, and ensure that the apprentice population is reflective of the general workforce in respect of diversity as well.&quot;</blockquote>The expansion of the national apprenticeship system has been a key government priority since 2016.Craft apprenticeship is currently being delivered using blended learning, due to the extended Level 5 restrictions; however, a phased return to onsite training has begun in recent weeks.The €20m will be allocated by SOLAS and the HEA across Education and Training Boards (ETBs), Institutes of Technology and Technological Universities.
