Parents and teachers are being urged to encourage more students to register for Apprenticeships as Ireland faces a chronic shortage that&#39;s driving a surge in costs and delaying vital building projects.That is the view of training centre manager Dave Tracey, who has stressed there are huge rewards for students and has urged teachers and parents to do a re-think.An alarming survey revealed only 30 people registered for apprenticeships in 2017 as plasterers compared to 300 who signed up as trainees 13 years ago.Meanwhile, 45 people signed up as apprentice painters which was a 72% drop since 2006 and bricklayers slumped from 679 to 65.Mr Tracey, a carpentry and joinery training manager at Sisk, said after the demise of the Celtic Tiger “employers stopped taking on apprentices, obviously there was no work so there was no future”.He added: “An apprenticeship is a four-year programme and it’s a four-year commitment from an employer to be fair.“So when things started picking up again in the last two-to-three years there has definitely been a massive skills shortage.“And this all goes back to secondary schools where career guidance teachers, principals and students even for that matter, there’s no drive on going into construction and apprentices in particular.“Prices are going up and the challenge is because of the lack of skills there is a lack of quality.“There’s a lack of delivery because there’s contractors that would like to take on more work but the supply chain is not there to deliver those jobs.”Some of the key highlights of the Government’s Project Ireland 2040 transport plan announced last year include a metro rail link from Dublin Airport to the city centre and Swords at a cost of €3billion and three new hospitals in Dublin, Cork and Galway.Mr Tracey, who started at Sisk himself as a apprentice carpenter in 1983, added: “A contractor could have a big contract and you have a certain amount of weeks to deliver a programme but the sub-contractors don’t have the men and they’re maxed-out.”“So in our 2040 plan, will we be able to deliver that? There are challenges.“We need more people coming into our industry, more craft people and we definitely need young people coming into our industry because they’re our next managers, our next leaders.”Mr Tracey said most of the work is in Leinster and Dublin in particular so it’s costing more and is taking longer to travel. He told how the housing market is a big part of the problem and added: “Construction workers would love to live in Dublin but they can’t because the housing is too dear and there’s a lack of supply.“That has an effect on our industry, there’s no doubt about it.”The carpentry expert said the lack of job security has led to a huge decline in young people taking up apprentices in “wet trades” such as bricklaying, plastering, painting and tiling.He added: “The reason being is it’s so easy to get on the phone and ring an agency and say I want 10 plasterers here.“And the job is finished then in 10 weeks time and that’s it [and they can] make the call and say ‘I’m finished with them lads, take them back’.“But that’s a short-term fix. Long term it’s not good for the industry and not only that it’s not good for the employee because they’re only getting 10 weeks work and then coming up to Christmas they could be laid off.“So there’s no security and people are committed to mortgages and loans and other things.“We need more people coming into our industry and we definitely need more young people because they’re our next managers, our next leaders.” An estimated 65,000 people left the construction industry during the recession but last year 1,000 new jobs were being created every month.Mr Tracey said: “We have to educate our young people and we have to promote apprenticeships and our industry. We’re going to schools and career fairs, but our biggest plug now is to get at employers.Sean Carter, 20, said a Sisk presentation at Holy Family Community School in Rathcoole, Dublin, convinced him to train as an apprentice carpenter and joiner with Sisk. His grandad was a skilled carpenter and tradesman and three of his uncles qualified as a carpenter, an electrician and a plumber respectively.The third year apprentice added: “The first time I thought about doing it was when Sisk came into the school and did a presentation about the whole apprenticeship and what it entailed and all of the details.“And that’s when my woodwork teacher Charlie Hill took me and five other lads aside and said, ‘Why not put in a CV and try’.“We were the ones that were always listening, always interested, always trying to do a bit more.“The career guidance beforehand, before Sisk came in, there was no real pointers towards apprenticeships at all.“It was kind of all CAO, college courses.”Sally Jean Doherty, 26, completed a fitness course and worked in that industry for three years before she started her carpentry apprenticeship at Sisk last October. Intel to invest billions into massive expansion of Leixlip site

By Pat McGrathWestern Correspondent150 new jobs are to be created in Co Mayo by an American firm, as part of its first expansion outside of the US.Meissner Filtration Products is setting up a manufacturing facility in Castlebar and will fill the positions over the next five years. The company says it will be operational in early 2020 and that the initial number of jobs is a conservative estimate of the potential for employment in the west. Meissner has acquired a building that was constructed by IDA Ireland in Castlebar and it plans to triple the size of its operation in the town in due course. The company&#39;s founder, Chris Meissner, said the availability of a new 34,000 square foot facility significantly reduced the set-up time for its Irish expansion. The site was chosen following a detailed analysis of a number of prospective locations around Europe. The announcement is seen as a boost for the Co Mayo town and comes after a number of similar announcements in recent years failed to deliver on the numbers of jobs promised. The IDA has constructed a number of so-called Advanced Technology Buildings on sites around the country. These provide adaptable premises that can be specifically tailored to the particular requirements of different industries. US firm Meissner to create 150 jobs in Castlebar

ALDI have announced they are looking for people to fill 14 positions in their Kerry stores.They have seven stores in Kerry in Tralee (2), Listowel, Castleisland, Killorglin and Killarney and Kenmare.The jobs are for Store Manager, Assistant Store Manager and Store Assistant positions. Yesterday, the German retailer announced it is set to hire 500 new staff in Ireland this year and open seven new stores.Aldi Ireland also confirmed that it will introduce a new minimum rate of pay of €11.90 per hour, matching the living wage rate recommended by the Living Wage Technical Group. The new rate of pay will be effective from February 1. Aldi is recruiting 20 new employees across its stores in Meath. Opportunities are now available for store manager, assistant store manager and store assistant positions at Aldi’s five Meath store - Kells, Ashbourne, Trim, Navan and Clonee.
Aldi Ireland also announced a new minimum rate of pay of €11.90 an hour, matching the Living Wage rate recommended by The Living Wage Technical Group. Over 2,500 apprentices will be needed annually to tackle the skills shortages in the construction industry, according to the industry&#39;s representative body. Today the CIF launched a new sponsorship scheme to boost the number of apprenticeships being offered to young people.Construction companies throughout the south gathered at a briefing in Cork yesterday to learn more about how they can join forces to increase the amount of young people entering apprenticeships in the sector. An Apprenticeship Sharing Scheme will now be run right across the country following a successful Pilot.CIF members are working to create co-ops whereby a number of construction companies choose to work collaboratively to provide training for new apprentices throughout the industry. The Shared Apprenticeship Scheme differs from the traditional model in two ways, firstly it allows direct employers and co-op members who may not be specialists in the appointed trade, but do employ skilled sub-contractors, to arrange for the training required under the guidance of the Co-Op. And secondly, co-op members will be able to move the apprentices between their companies to ensure continuity of engagement and training should one area or particular project become more or less busy than another.“We are seeking the support of construction companies throughout the southern region and across Ireland for the Apprenticeship Sharing initiative. This is an industry effort to grow the numbers of apprentices registering to the wet trades, which are sadly lagging at this time. In 2015/16 my company was part of a pilot of this sharing initiative and we deemed it to be a success.Now, SOLAS have agreed to extend this project and I am calling on members to form consortia of three to four companies and start registering apprentices under the scheme. This is a great opportunity for industry to seek to address the low numbers in the wet trades (bricklaying, plastering and Painting &amp; decorating).” According to Dermot Carey, Director Safety and Training, CIF, the scheme is one approach which those in the industry can take to address the skills challenges currently being faced by the sector, particularly when it comes to the wet trades.“Ireland faces the challenge of generating the 112,000 additional employees required up to 2020 to deliver the targets set out in both the housing strategy and the public capital programme,” Dermot Carey said.“There is an urgent need for Government and industry to collaborate in attracting more people into the industry and to invest in construction skills training. The alternative is that we will fail to meet these targets, our housing crisis will continue and our infrastructure deficit will stall economic progress. This is a huge threat to Ireland and the long-term capacity of the construction industry.We need to address this by attracting people back into the industry from the live register, through our education system and by reaching out to those members of the diaspora with construction experience and upskilling our existing workforce. We also drastically need to address the apprenticeship system, to ensure that we have a steady stream of skilled employees to sustain the construction activity our economy and society requires. This Apprenticeship Sharing Scheme is just one very practical step we are making in this journey.The construction sector is the principal industry sector in Ireland for the employment of apprentices. At its height, the sector employed nearly 27,000 (92%) of apprentices. Following the decline of the economy from 2008 onwards, this number fell to a low of circa 7,000 in 2013. However, the Irish construction industry has been hiring at a rate of 1000 additional employees a month since 2013.In 2016, the CIF launched an innovative, ‘Shared Apprenticeship Scheme’ pilot in conjunction with SOLAS, which allowed a number of member companies to take on apprentices as part of a consortium. The scheme gave participating companies the ability to share apprentices with other members if the pace of work lessened, providing consistent training and work experience for the apprentices involved.Four companies took part in this pilot scheme, taking on four apprentices between them and thanks to the recovery in the economy, the companies involved have not needed to share their apprentices, but nonetheless that safety net was there for these companies and it gave them the confidence to take on these apprentices once again. One of the companies had never taken on an apprentice before and they found it so beneficial that they started taking on apprentices in their own right also. The scheme is currently being rolled out across Ireland and while it is not going to be the only solution to the low numbers of apprentices that we are experiencing, it will certainly be part of the solution.” Conor O’Connell, Regional Director, Southern Region, CIF added that despite activity in the construction sector increasing, the industry is continuing to struggle with regard to apprentice sign ups figures.“Construction activity continues to increase in the region with many major projects commencing or due to commence shortly. The output of the sector will increase substantially in 2019 and we need more people to consider a career in construction. However, despite the upturn in construction there are not enough young people considering a trade,” Conor O’Connell said.“The wet trades in particular- such as plastering, painting and bricklaying- are struggling with apprenticeship numbers. The industry is changing significantly due to the impact of technology such as Building Information Modelling, but there will always be a need for these trades and they provide an excellent career opportunity for young people that wish to work in construction. There is incredible pride amongst tradespeople in their job and a great sense of satisfaction in the buildings they help to create and maintain. If you like working with your hands, these trades can provide an exceptionally rewarding career where every day you see the effects of your skill on the environment around you.”Following on from the 2015 / 2016 pilot scheme where the South East Branch of CIF / and SOLAS collaborated to run a pilot of the “Apprenticeship Sharing Scheme” it has been agreed to escalate the take up of this scheme nationally.CIF undertook to seek to put together a number of consortia, based on the same criteria as the initial pilot, to seek to increase the numbers of registrations to the plastering, painting &amp; New Apprenticeship Sharing Scheme Launched - 2,500+ Apprentices Required

People who are deaf or hard of hearing and interested in becoming primary school teachers are being invited to apply for a new teacher training strand, the first of its kind in Ireland, which begins next September at Dublin City University. The new strand, to be delivered within DCU&#39;s existing Bachelor of Education programme, will include a module in Irish Sign Language.It is being introduced initially on a pilot basis and will have six places. Those interested can apply through the current CAO process, which closes on 1 February. The places are being funded through a scheme which aims to increase the number of students with disabilities at third level. They are geared towards members of the deaf community who wish to become primary school teachers and work with deaf children.Apart from specialised modules such as one in Irish Sign Language, students on the new programme will study alongside hearing peers on the university&#39;s main Bachelor of Education programme. The higher-level Leaving Certificate Irish qualification that is required for other students will be replaced by a requirement of a similar level in Irish Sign Language. The four-year full-time undergraduate programme also includes a 30-week school placement. Announcing the new programme, Minister for Education Joe McHugh said the move was a hugely important step towards ensuring increased access and inclusion for all in the classroom.He said it would enable deaf children who use Irish Sign Language in primary school to fully access the curriculum by having teachers who are fluent ISL users. This will generate more than £800,000 in additional annual salaries for the local economy.Invest NI offered the company more than £600,000 towards the construction of its new factory, purchase of machinery, job creation and staff training.The engineering firm specialises in producing machined precision component parts for the aerospace interiors and pharmaceutical sectors. This includes manufacturing, machine prototyping, and tool and mould production.Speaking at the official opening of the new facility, the company’s joint managing director Brian Boyce said: “This is an exciting time for us at Boyce Precision Engineering as we begin the next stage of our journey.
