PhD Opportunity in Critical Care Translational Immunology and Critical Care Retrieval Medicine We invite applications from trainees in Anaesthesiology and/or Intensive Care Medicine interested in pursuing a PhD and a career in academic intensive care medicine. This unique position combines clinical and scientific roles, in collaboration between Trinity College Dublin and the National Ambulance Service Critical Care & Retrieval Services. The successful candidate will: • Undertake a PhD in translational immunology under the supervision of Prof. Nigel Stevenson (Viral Immunology Laboratory, TCD), focusing on the effects of RSV infection on innate immune pathways, with and without immunisation. • Work as a critical care retrieval doctor in the NAS-CCRS adult (MICAS) and paediatric (IPATS) teams (2 days/week) under the direction of a Retrieval Consultant This program is designed to equip future ICU specialists with foundational immunology knowledge, complementing core biomedical sciences of Critical Care Medicine, while retaining and developing clinical skills of an Intensivist or Retrievalist. Eligibility Criteria: • Completion (or near completion) of specialist training in Anaesthesiology and/or Intensive Care Medicine. Paediatric or Emergency Medicine trainees should have training in Anaesthesiology or Intensive Care • Demonstrated intellectual curiosity and project completion. • Understanding and interest in viral infection and disease, molecular biology and Immunology. Basic science training is not required; hands-on lab training and scientific integration will be provided. • Experience and competency in the management of acute critical illness and injury in children and adults • Good understanding of the principles of clinical governance • Ideally have APLS and or ACLS (or willingness to undertake both) • Experience of undertaking critical care transports from any of the 3 disciplines – Adults/Paediatrics or Neonates • Good communication and organisational skills • Ability to maintain CPD to a high standard • Ability to work as part of a multidisciplinary team in regional centres, respecting the input of all team members Position Details: • Duration: 4 years For further information Contact: Dr Dermot Doherty Dermot.doherty@hse.ie and / or Prof Nigel Stevenson N.Stevenson@tcd.ie Closing Date: 25th April 2025

Our area comprises Dublin, south of O’Connell Bridge, throughout parts of the south city and county e.g. Rathmines, Clondalkin, Tallaght and Lucan, across all of Kildare and West Wicklow. Mental Health Services are informed by a person-centred and recovery approach and are provided through various different settings including acute inpatient services, day hospitals and outpatient clinics. The community eating disorder team is a new development and is part of the national clinical care programme for eating disorders, which is a collaboration between the HDE, Bodywhys and the College of Psychiatrists in Ireland. The new adult eating disorder team will provide a service to adults with a diagnosis of an eating disorder. The four main presentations are anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, binge eating disorder and ARFID. As the post is linked with the national clinical care programme, there are constant CPD updates, networking and opportunities. The HSE Dublin and Midlands serves a population of circa 1,077,639 providing health and social care services to communities living within Dublin West, Dublin South-West, Dublin South City, Laois, Longford, Offaly, Kildare, West Wicklow and Westmeath. Currently, approximately 30k staff work within the HSE Dublin and Midlands Region providing key health and social care services with a budget of €3 billion. The region has 4 Integrated Health Areas, serving a population of around 300,000 and take account of local geographies, population size, needs and services. The IHA areas are HSE Dublin South City and West, HSE Dublin South West, HSE Kildare and West Wicklow and HSE Midlands and the Integrated Healthcare Managers are in post since October 2024. IHAs bring together both acute and community services as well as other non-HSE providers and are crucial to supporting and enabling integrated care. Within the 4 Integrated Health Areas there are 9 acute hospital (model 4s and 3s, mix of statutory and voluntary providers) delivering a full range of acute hospital, women and children’s services, in addition to specialised radiation and oncology care. There are also 6 integrated care hubs/csts and 20 Community Health Networks who together will serve the population health needs of our area. The reform programme for HSE Dublin and Midlands provides an opportunity to shape the future of health and social care in a rapidly changing environment and to continue to implement safer better health care through integrated services. Health Regions will be the primary service coordination and delivery units for the vast majority of health and social care services provided across Ireland. They will provide the governance and organisational arrangements to enable planning, management and delivery of care for people and for communities across their region.

Hygiene & Safety: Maintain high standards of hygiene and adhere to the principles of infection prevention and control. Qualifications Required: Minimum FETAC Level 5 / QQI qualification or a relevant healthcare discipline. 2+ years of experience in home care, nursing home care, or in an acute setting. Experience in the care of the elderly or care of people with disabilities. Excellent verbal and written communication skills (English Level B1).
