JOB PURPOSE: The post holder will be required to carry out scheduled maintenance operations on all fleet vehicles, plant and equipment. This will include light vans and lorries, specialist vehicles such as road sweepers etc., heavy goods and complex vehicles including refuse lorries and rear end loaders. The post holder will be required to act as Foreperson on rotational basis as and when required. MAIN DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES: 1. Repair and maintenance of light and heavy goods vehicles, plant and machinery including fault diagnosis. 2. Attend off-site breakdowns and effect necessary repairs to render vehicle roadworthy or recover to Depot. 3. Carry out new vehicle Pre-Delivery Inspections and Routine Vehicle Safety Inspections. Commission new plant and equipment and maintain fleet records. 4. Carry out planned maintenance works on all fleet vehicles in accordance with annual programme. Plan required maintenance operations and parts requirements etc to ensure efficient and effective servicing to minimise downtime for all fleet vehicles. 5. Identify, research, compile, deliver and evaluate relevant training courses to Craigavon Borough Council employees, Agency and Casual staff, on vehicle, plant and equipment related issues to Freight Transport Association and ‘O’ License requirements. 6. Lead, Supervise and implement projects commensurate with the post as and when required, taking responsibility for results, completion dates etc. 7. Road test vehicles, and make recommendations to Supervision on safety/road worthiness of vehicles. 8. Responsible for the security of fleet items and mobile plant while in the Garage premises and for the authorised movements of such items in and out of the Workshop. 9. Carry out responsive maintenance works on all fleet vehicles as necessary and as directed by Supervision. Operate a triage system. 10. Liaising with other Council Departments as required and to co-operate and assist Supervisors in the day-to-day running of the various sections with regard to machinery and fleet. 11. Make recommendations to Supervision and Stores management on parts/spares and repairs required to affect a cost effective repair to vehicles/plant. 12. Carry out detailed PSV/MOT pre-inspections on all vehicles and make recommendations to Supervision as to type and extent of repairs needed to ensure a PSV/MOT pass. 13. Carry out fault diagnostics on a wide range of specialist vehicle control systems, including hydraulic, pneumatic, electrical and electronic systems. 14. Use computer based vehicle test/diagnostic systems to diagnose and repair and adjust vehicle systems. 15. Carry out bodywork, chassis repairs and re-fabrication on a range of vehicles and plant, requiring skills in the use of welding (mig, arc and gas) soldering, cutting and sheet metal forming, panel beating and spray painting. 16. Maintain written records of all work against each individual vehicle or item of plant, in accordance with DVA regulations and Council procedures. 17. Supervise other specialist contracted trades who are authorised to work on the same vehicle. 18. Supervise and train temporary, agency and placement staff as necessary. 19. Undertake specialists training e.g. bin-lift control systems, CSR plant operations, fork truck operations, hydraulics/hydrostatic diagnostics, manufacturer’s courses, CPC as required. 20. Maintenance of wide range of grounds/grass maintenance equipment including agricultural tractors and implements, ride-on mowing machines, range of plant, as well as site plant including tele handlers, hoists and compactors etc. 21. Sharpening cylinders and knife blades with precision computerised equipment to manufacturer’s specification. 22. Design and fabricate metal components for Council Departments as and when requested. 23. Carry out all the duties of the post in the working conditions normally inherent in the job. 24. Be fully aware of all Health and Safety requirements in relation to all vehicle, plant and equipment maintenance procedures, handling and storage of heavy materials, manual handling procedures and all other appropriate safety related legislation. 25. Undertake any other relevant duties that may be required and are commensurate with the nature and grade of the post. Qualifications and training • City & Guilds/NVQ Level 2 in Motor Vehicle/HGV Studies or equivalent. Experience • Minimum of one year’s post apprenticeship experience in motor vehicle maintenance. You will acquire the necessary skills and knowledge to install, maintain, and repair high voltage electrical systems. The H&MV Electrical Apprenticeship Program provides hands-on training and classroom instruction to help you develop your technical expertise. The Apprenticeship Program will also give you exposure to multiple disciplines including control and protection systems, HV AIS and GIS substation construction, safety compliance, HV switchgear assembly, grid transformer assembly, HV cable jointing, commissioning and asset management (maintenance). Responsibilities: 1. HV Substations: Support in the construction of HV AIS and GIS substations. You would be helping in the construction of earth grid installation, grid transformer assembly, GIS and AIS switchgear assembly, HV circuit breaker and control and protection panel installation. Installation of control and protection cables including glanding and terminations under the guidance of senior HV electricians. 2. Asset Management: Under the supervision of HV service engineers you will participate in the maintenance, testing and repair of HV electrical systems including HV switchgear, HV transformers, protection relay testing, earth testing and LV circuit breaker maintenance. Learn to use specialized testing equipment and diagnostic tools to troubleshoot faults and ensure system integrity. Learn to compile comprehensive testing and maintenance reports. 3. HV Cable Jointing: Under the supervision of HV cable jointers you will participate in the installation of HV cable systems including containment, glanding and termination of various types of HV cable. Learn the proper use of specialised tools and test equipment. Learn to compile installation check sheets and cable test reports. 4. Commissioning: Under the supervision of commissioning engineers you will gain an understanding of commissioning philosophies as well as reading electrical schematic and single line drawings. You will participate in the testing and verification of HV protection systems using specialized testing equipment.  5. Safety Compliance: Adhere to safety protocols and guidelines while working with high voltage equipment. Follow established safety procedures, use personal protective equipment (PPE), and maintain a clean and organized work environment. Report any hazards or potential risks to senior personnel. 6. Documentation and Reporting: Assist in documenting installation and maintenance activities, including work performed, materials used, and any issues encountered. Keep accurate records of inspections, tests, and repairs. Prepare reports and provide updates to supervisors. 7. Learning and Development: Attend classroom training sessions and workshops to enhance technical knowledge and understanding of high voltage electrical systems. Take part in on-the-job training to acquire practical skills and familiarity with industry best practices. 8. Collaboration: Collaborate with team members – including electricians, technicians, and contractors – to ensure efficient workflow and successful project completion. Follow instructions and seek guidance from experienced professionals to develop your skills and knowledge. 9. Compliance with codes and regulations: Familiarize yourself with local, state, and national electrical codes and regulations relevant to high voltage electrical systems.
