The Gallery wishes to recruit an Art Handler on a permanent contract basis. The purpose of the role is to ensure the safe handling of the National Collection and of exhibitions and will be a core part of the Art Handling team. Reporting to the Art Handling and Loans Manager, the core duties and responsibilities are to: · Ensure the safe and efficient movement, handling and storage of artworks · Install & de-install artworks in the Gallery, including all exhibitions and associated materials (e.g. plinths, display cases, labels, display panels) · Assess the safety of all movement of artworks and take the necessary action to secure artworks · In collaboration with the Exhibitions team, design display solutions for exhibitions · Partake in the planning and execution of complex art moves and installations · Carry out physical audits of the collection as required · Pack/unpack artworks to the highest international standards · Construct travel frames and fit out crates · Work closely with the conservation team on care of the collection including assisting with framing (or otherwise) of artworks · Supervise collections and deliveries of artworks from/to the Gallery & to load/unload trucks (often out of hours) · Transport art works from various locations as part of the touring programmes · Assist with the implementation of the Aviation Security programme, including driving to and from the airport and being trained to oversee cargo loading · Play a key role in the Disaster Recovery process which requires being called upon out of hours in the event of an incident involving the collection · Assist in maintaining the upkeep of the storage areas · Undertake administrative duties related to the post such as checking and recording artwork locations, including during collection audits, and checking crate and equipment lists. · Assume other duties appropriate to the post as assigned by the line manager and/or Head of Department The successful candidate will have: · Extensive experience as an Art Handler with similar collections · Knowledge and practical experience of Health and Safety in relation to Art Handling · An understanding of the Art handling function and international best practice · Self- motivated with a willingness to learn new techniques and develop the role · A positive proactive can-do attitude and well-developed interpersonal skills, with the capacity to work as part of a team · An adaptable and flexible attitude to work, coupled with an ability to work under pressure and to tight deadlines · A flexible approach to problem solving · Full clean driving licence (to drive a Ford Transit/Mercedes Sprinter or similar) · A commitment to, and interest in, the gallery & museum sector · Proficient in IT, particularly MS office · Experience working with a collection management system is desirable · Experience working with Computer Aided Design (CAD) is desirable · Experience in multimedia and site specific installations is desirable · Up to date Mobile Elevating Work Platform (MEWP) and Manual Handling is desirable Note that the Art Handler role requires heavy lifting and (de)installation of large artworks, the post holder must be physically able to do so.
