Salary: HSE JUNE 2024 payscales (SHO) ( depending on reckonable service)

Senior House Officer post in Geriatric / Rehabilitation Medicine in Clontarf Hospital. It is a Consultant led team under the National Clinical Programme For Older People in partnership with acute hospitals in the North Dublin area. Clontarf Hospital forms an integral part of the Hospital Care Programme of the Health Services providing step-down facilities to the acute hospitals in the Dublin area and is located in Clontarf on the Northside of the city. It provides services in orthopaedic and older person rehabilitation. We are looking to recruit Senior House Officers who have a particular interest and experience in the care of the elderly in an Irish acute setting. All applicants must hold registration on the Register of Medical Practitioners maintained by the Irish Medical Council and have a right to work in Ireland.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Competencies

  • The Senior House Officer will:

    • Be responsible for assessment, diagnosis, planning, implementation and evaluation of treatment for patients according to professional standards and under the supervision of the liaising Consultant
    • Document all assessments, diagnoses, treatments, clinical notes, relevant contacts and summaries in accordance with department and professional standards
    • Communicate results of assessments and recommendations to the patient and relevant others as appropriate
    • Foster close working relationships with colleagues and other relevant professionals in maximising the patient’s potential
    • Participate in teams, communicating and working in collaboration with the patient and other team members as part of an integrated package of care
    • Participate in relevant meetings, case conferences and ward rounds; followed by documentation of findings on each patient’s chart; follow through with actions arising from the round
    • In conjunction with the Supervising Consultant, contribute to the development and implementation of procedures, policies and guidelines while adhering to existing standards and protocols
    • Must be very familiar with adhering to and implementing HIQAs National Standards – Safer Better Care policies and procedures.
    • Maintain professional standards in relation to confidentiality, ethics and legislation
    • Seek advice and assistance from the Consultant with any assigned cases or issues that prove to be beyond the scope of his / her professional competence in line with principles of best practice and clinical governance
    • Participate in audits and research
    • Engage in technological developments as they apply to the patient and service administration
    • A comprehensive hand-over is required at the beginning and end of each shift
    • Address placement of IV Cannulae
    • Administrator IV drug therapies
    • Bladder Catheterisation

    Education and Training

    • Appropriate primary Medical degree and Full General Registration with the Irish Medical Council is required.
    • Candidates require current ACLS certification or must acquire certification within 3 months of appointment
    • MRCP/MRCPI/FRCSI or equivalent post graduate qualification would be desirable
    • Candidates, ideally, should be engaged in research or have a research proposal in place
    • It is essential that all canidates have experience workign within the Irish Accute Hospital setting

    Health & Safety

    • Comply with the policies, procedures and safe professional practice of the Irish Healthcare System by adhering to relevant legislation, regulations and standards
    • Document appropriately and report any near misses, hazards and accidents and bring them to the attention of relevant / designated individual(s) in line with best practice
    • Work in a safe manner with due care and attention to the safety of self and others. Take reasonable care to protect one’s own safety, health and welfare and that of others who may be affected by acts or omissions while at work
    • Be aware of risk management issues, identify risks and take appropriate action
    • Promote a culture that values diversity and respect
    • Not to engage in improper conduct
    • Not to be under the influence of an intoxicant
    • Make correct use of suitable appliances e.g. lifting aids, Personal Protective Equipment
    • Attend training- the following are mandatory training sessions that you will have to attend based on your job description
    • BLS (Basic Life Support) - Fire - Manual Handling - Hand Hygiene - Open Disclosure

    Administrative

    • Ensure good working practice and adherence to standards of best practice
    • Promote quality by reviewing and evaluating the service, identifying changing needs and opportunities to improve services
    • Assist the Consultant in service development, including policy development and implementation
    • Ensure the maintenance of accurate records in line with best clinical governance, the organisation’s requirements and the Freedom of Information Act, and provide reports and other information / statistics as required
    • Engage in service audit and demonstrate the achievement of the service objectives
    • Represent the department / profession / team at meetings and conferences as appropriate
    • Keep up to date with change and developments within the Irish Health

    Legislation / Policy / Procedures:

    • Co-operate with such measures as are necessary to ensure compliance with the requirements of the European Working Time Directive and related Irish legislation comply with statutory and regulatory requirements, agreed training principles1 where appropriate, corporate policies and procedures and human resource policies and procedures (e.g. Dignity At Work, Trust in Care, Flexible Working Scheme etc).
    • Co-operate with such arrangements as are put into pace to verify the delivery of all contractual commitments: document appropriately and report any near misses, hazards and accidents and bring them to the attention of relevant / designated individual(s) in line with best practice. Be aware of risk management issues, identify risks and take appropriate action.
