Library Guard

The Purpose of the Role The role provides security and health & safety for the Libraries on-campus reading rooms in the Library complex and the Hamilton Library. It facilitates access via the opening hours of the listed Libraries, to students, academics and researchers.

Context The Library of Trinity College Dublin, The University of Dublin is now accepting applications for a temporary full-time term-time Library Guard. The post holder will join a team of 11 Library Guards in the Library who monitor the Library’s reading rooms. The work pattern is a 39-hour week, 33 weeks per year, working every Saturday, as follows: Monday to Thursday 16:00 – 22:30 Friday 16:30 – 22:30 Saturday 08:30 – 16:30

Main Responsibilities This is a list of the tasks, duties and responsibilities for the role. • Security o Patrolling reading rooms and library buildings o Maintaining good order o Checking of readers entering libraries o Opening and locking up of reading rooms o Assisting in emergency procedures o Preparation of incident & accident reports • Public Relations o Library Guards are an integral part of the library team and often the first point of contact a reader will have with the library o Customer Care is an essential part of the Library Guards duties • General o Communicating with supervisors & colleagues, internal staff and external partners o Preparing rooms for events/conferences o Setting up equipment as required o An appreciation of readers’ needs and behaviour o A demonstrated commitment to customer care o Evidence of working independently and as part of a team o An energetic and adaptable approach to a variety of tasks o First aid skills would be desirable o Flexibility with regards work schedule o Full uniform is provided and required to be worn, in a clean and neat fashion, at all times o Radios and other equipment are provided and must be utilised o Attending training as required in order to carry out the duties of the post, particularly for Health & Safety and Legislative requirements o Undertaking other tasks in line with position and grade, as may arise Person Requirements The role-holder will require the following knowledge, skills and attributes for successful performance in the role.

Qualifications • Fetac certificate in security is desirable • First Aid certificate is desirable

Knowledge, Experience & Skills • Fetac certificate in security is desirable • Relevant work experience (e.g. library/ public service area) – Essential • Ability to cope with repetitive and manual tasks – Essential • Good communication and interpersonal skills – Essential • Experience in working under pressure in a busy environment – Essential • Level of competency in IT skills (e.g. knowledge of email) – Desirable • Experience of working as part of a team – Essential • Prior Customer Care experience – Desirable • Prior Security training – Desirable • First Aid training – Desirable • Language skills – Desirable

This appointment will be made on the Fortnightly Merged Library Guard Salary Scale (€1,284.48 - €1,452.91 per fortnight) at a point in line with current Government pay policy. monthly/weekly payscales. (tcd.ie)
