CHI at Crumlin houses a 23 bedded Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) incorporating both a General and Cardiac ICU. It is one of the largest ICUs in the UK and Ireland with approximately 1,000 admissions per annum and supports multiple national sub-specialist services including cardiology, cardiothoracic surgery (at quaternary level for the Island of Ireland), oncology, gastroenterology, respiratory medicine, endocrinology, neurology and ENT. Furthermore, it houses Ireland’s only extracorporeal life support (ECLS) service for children.

The PICU at CHI Temple Street is a 9 bedded general unit which supports the national metabolic and neurosurgical services amongst others and facilitates the national renal transplant programme. It receives over 400 admissions yearly.

Both units staff the Irish Paediatric Acute Transport Service (IPATS), which stabilises and retrieves patients referred from throughout Ireland, by both land and air.
