Health Care Assistant
Purpose of the Role
The post holder will assist the nurses with the day to day running of the ward. The Health Care Assistant (HCA) will work under the supervision and direction of the ward nursing staff and CNM’s in relation to the duties and responsibilities associated with patient care. Roles for example may include assisting with tracheostomy care under the direct supervision of a registered nurse. Nursing staff will decide in respect of each patient the work which will be undertaken by the HCA. Confidentiality must be maintained for all patients at all times. The Health Care Assistant will work closely with parents in providing care. The role includes general maintenance of equipment, stocking up and household cleaning. Within the Wards the Health Care Assistant will be directed on a daily basis under the supervision of Ward Manager /Deputy / Supervisor in relation to duties and responsibilities associated with service delivery for that day. The management team will decide which area or duties they will allocate to the Health Care Assistant for that day or part thereof. The Health Care Assistant must ensure confidentiality for all patients and maintain and promote good working relations with all users of the Ward service.
Essential Criteria:
· Leaving Certificate
· QQI Level 5 Qualification
· Previous Acute Hospital Experience or Experience of working with Children in a Healthcare Setting
