Leadership and Accountability

  • Accept responsibility for management of all general nursing services over a 24 hour period and ensure that systems are in place to support this responsibility.
  • The Director of Nursing will also be part of the Hospital’s on-call rota.

· Provide strategic and clinical leadership and direction for nursingand related services which results in the delivery of effective, efficient, quality assured and patient centred nursingcare.

· Act as Patient Advocate and represent Nursing at IHA and Regional DON Forum

· Develop a shared sense of commitment and participation among staff in the management of change, the development of the nursingservices and in responding to the changing health needs of patients.

· Be responsible for strategy and policy on practice development, education and professional duties imposed by statute or determination.

· Keep the Hospital Manager, Regional Director of Nursing and Midwifery, IHA Manager and REO or other designated officer, appraised of any significant development within his/her area of responsibility and perform such additional duties as may be assigned from time to time by the Hospital Manager, Regional Director of Nursing and Midwifery or other designated officer.

· Be accountable to Hospital Manager and Regional Director of Nursing and Midwifery for Patient Safety and Quality standards in nursing care and assure the delivery of high standards of care through robust performance measurement processes.

Planning

  • Key objectives for the nursing service will be set on an annual basis.
  • Develop, maintain and review the nursing organisational structure in the context of overall organisational objectives and within the Integrated Services area.
  • Position the nursing contribution within the wider Integrated Services context.
  • Formulation of policies and the selection, introduction and development of information and other systems for the nursing service.
  • Develop knowledge of systems used by nurses in other agencies and/or countries, including staffing, personnel, financial and patient information systems.
  • Prepare reports on nursing and related activities and expenditure as required. Define objectives and identify major action plans for each Division of Nursing Management.
  • Develop annual service plan for Nursing in Letterkenny University Hospital
  • Participate as a core member of the Hospital Management Team in the hospital and contribute to the preparation of plans for services.
