Clinical Nurse Manager, Transplant Coordinator, University Hospital
Purpose of the Post
The post of CNM 2 has a pivotal role in service planning, co-ordinating, and managing activity and resources within the clinical area. The main responsibilities are: quality assurance, resource management, staffing and staff development, practice development, facilitating communication and professional / clinical leadership and mentorship.
Designated Cancer Care Centre
CUH is one of the nine designated cancer centres of the HSE National Cancer Care Programme (NCCP) and one of two centres in the southern region. We provide cancer services predominantly to people who live in the counties of Cork, Kerry, South Tipperary, West Waterford and South East Limerick. Our cancer services include tests to diagnose cancer, surgical cancer treatments, haematology oncology services, medical oncology consultation, chemotherapy, and radiotherapy treatments.
The Haematology service provides both an in-patient and out-patient service along with a Day Unit Service for malignant and non-malignant Haematology. As well as providing a large general clinical haematology service, the department is a tertiary referral centre for acute leukaemia, and other complex acute adult haematology. There are over 500 inpatient admissions under the Haematology Service annually. More than 90% of these patients have a malignant diagnosis including acute leukaemia, high grade lymphoma and autologous stem cell transplantation.
Transplant Coordinator
The hospital has a very busy Haematology/Oncology stem cell transplant service. Currently patients are referred to St James’s Hospital and University Hospital Galway for their transplant. The Clinical Nurse Manager 2 (CNM2) - Haematology Oncology Transplant plays a pivotal role in the preparation and follow-up of patients pre and post Stem Cell Transplant. The CNM2 Haematology Oncology Transplant provides a vital link for the patients and the many services which they will need to access during the course of their treatment. The hospital is currently involved in developing plans to allow us to deliver autologous stem cell transplants onsite. Future strategic planning includes the development of a dedicated lab for harvesting.
