Clinical Nurse Manager, Critical Care, University Hospital

University Hospital Kerry opened in 1984 and is a model 3 hospital within the South/South West Hospital Group.

Under the management of an Executive Management Team including General Manager, Clinical Director, Director of Nursing and Director of Midwifery the hospital provides acute general hospital services to the population of Co. Kerry and additionally to the populations of West Limerick and North Cork including Emergency Department, General Surgery, Internal Medicine, Orthopaedics /Trauma, General Paediatric, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, neonatal, Intensive and critical care, oncology and renal dialysis services.

UHK is a site for clinical placements for student midwives and student nurses in undergraduate and postgraduate programmes delivered in partnership with Munster Technological University, Tralee and the primary group Academic Partner University College Cork.

Divisional Nursing Management

There are currently four Divisions of Senior Nurse Management which are aligned to the national directorate structures.

• Upgrade of Operating Theatre environment

• Reconfiguration of Medical Floor and Critical Care services.

• Development of stand-alone Maternity/ Gynaecology and neonatal services.

• Expansion of Oncology services.

• Further expansion of the laboratory.

Purpose of Post

To provide professional / clinical leadership in the designated area(s) of responsibility. To oversee the management of resources including staffing and staff development. To facilitate communication across the healthcare teams.

The post of CNM 3 has a pivotal role in service planning and development, co-ordinating and managing activity and resources within the clinical area. The CNM 3’s responsibilities include: overseeing the quality of nursing care, the development and implementation of policy and procedures, the monitoring of activity and the delivery of agreed levels of service for the designated area(s). The CNM3 plays a key role in providing clinical and professional leadership and promoting the values of the organisation.
